That looks pretty cool, but I don't see what it has to do with DirectX 10. The author doesn't meantion DirectX anywhere in the article.

That's pretty amazing. The areas with the brighter lighting look almost plastic, and something is off with the hair.

What he said. I seen this article a few days back. What does this have to do with DirectX 10? This was done via modeling software (3ds max) and not realtime rendering.

I'm under the assumption the artist was using DirectX 10 APIs, since 3DSmax allows for that option. The website that directed me to the article mentioned that it was.

you can use direct X or OpenGL for the real-time stuff in 3ds max, ie handling the program interface. All the rendering is done on the CPU and not the GPU (unless you have a workstation card), so it's not used in rendering this image.

Not quite enough sub-surface scattering I would image.

Even as a still image, it's still in the uncanny valley. Only just, though.

As our good friend Barc0de stated, You can use DirectX or OpenGL for the work windows while modeling. The use of DirectX 10 will be helpful since you can do more advance things in the preview window (on par with what 360/ps3 games do in real time). Yet that has nothing to do with the actual image rendering which as far as I know is just ray tracing which is nothing but cpu computational math (not gpu rendering).

Correct, the kind of things you will achieve as an accomplished 3DSMax artist via rendering is never going to be faithfully reproduced in real time (or at least there will be a 5-10 year lag).

When artists use 3DSMax for modelling they export the file to the engine they're working with or use plug-ins to ensure everything will work together. They don't render it!

Looks like a photograph to me. 0_o

Other than maybe the clothes, it looks really good. With games like Crysis with their almost realistic graphics, I think something like this could very well be created in the next 5 years or so.

I do remember the Crysis shot, and what that made me tick about the graphics in the Crysis engine, was the grass. it looked totally off. her hair splits looks weird, and unatural, and well she still looks too plastic like.

But it is a well done picture anyway.

The ears and clothes give it away in the picture, but its still a great job.

This reminds me of some Ms.Universe they were doing with computer generated girls, wonder what ever happened to that..

It would have fooled me if I had given it a casual once over. The artist said he was going for an air brushed look and that is exactly what I thought it looked like.

Doesn't look any better than what Liam Kemp has been doing for years:

She looks like one of those rubber dolls they showed on that documentary on Channel 4 last year "Men who love their dolls"

True, but the other one doesn't look any more real. No matter how much power they throw at things like this, they still can't get smiles or eyes right.
