I've been thinking about better ways to organize my discs, by which I mean DVDs, CDs, GD-ROMs, etc. I think I have somewhere in the ballpark of 250 discs, so it's rather hard to find a way to keep them all organized, easily transportable, and separated by category. When I say category, I mean I want my games to remain separated based on what kind of disc they are - DVD, CD, PS2 disc, Saturn disc, Xbox 360 disc, etc.

Right now I have a small metal container that holds around 150 discs. It fits most of my discs, but not all. I keep the ones that I don't need where I'm living right now in separate cases, the kind that are made of some kind of fabric and open like a small photo album. So I guess part of my problem is being able to separate certain sections of my collection and reattach them when necessary.

Ideally I would put all of my discs into one large container. That poses some problems, though. For one thing, it'd be large and unwieldy. For another, it doesn't allow me to separate my collection to keep different parts of it in different places. Also, my collection is constantly growing, so no matter how large a container I get my collection will probably outgrow it at some point. I could also put them into a few of those large, soft containers. The problem with that is that it would be hard to keep the discs separated by category. If I sorted them end to end, then if I got a new disc in one category them I'd have to shift everything to keep it in that category.

So what I'm thinking now is that maybe I should have several smaller hard containers like the one I have right now. The one I have now is pretty nice, but there are probably better ones out there. What do you guys recommend? Perhaps you could recommend a different strategy altogether?

Yeah, I know this sounds kind of obsessive/weird. I have a lot of free time.

How about cd/dvd cakes? Easy to stack and easy to label.

Hmm, so what you are looking for is a way to keep your loose discs organized? Or even the ones you have boxed you keep the boxes elsewhere and all the discs together?

I'd recommend large CD/DVD binders (ones that hold like 200+ or 250+ discs each). You can have a couple for each type of media, and within the same binder spare a couple of pages to put labels and make sections, and then add a sticky color separator like one of these:

I have, for example, 2 binders (150 discs each) for all my PC CD/DVDs, and have them organized like that, a page that says "PC Games" and then all the games, "Software", "Hardware Drivers" etc.

If your concern is the ongoing growth and the need to keep up, you can buy a regular 2 hole or 4 hole binder and buy loose CD/DVD sleeves like this one:

    Hope that helps!

If you're going for 2x2 disc wallets make sure you get stitched and not binders. Binders are crap and pull themselves to bits in no time, the stitched ones last forever. Especially avoid the ~500 disc double-binder ones, they get too heavy and are even more prone to pulling themselves apart.

    ^ This.

When I said 200+ 250+ CD/DVD binders I ment the stitched wallets. My bad.

I need to do this ASAP

I have 4 Binders and they are spitting out discs....

    DAMN!
Keeping everything organized is a bitch. Specially when you USE the discs on a regular basis.

Another interesting idea would be to get some sort of small filing cabinet for discs. That would be a good way of keeping everything super organized and also in style (plus the obvious advantages of keeping the discs in good shape for a long time).

The problem with that is that it takes up lots of space.

The two main advantages of wallets is that they're small enough to be portable and can be flicked through. I used to use cake tubs but it quickly becomes a real hassle finding things.

Well, the problem is that if I use a binder it's hard to keep the discs separated for each type of media. I only have 200-250 discs total, so I wouldn't want to have a separate binder for each type of media. At the same time, if they were all in the same binder it'd be hard to add discs to the sections that are earlier in the binder. Do you get what I'm saying? Maybe there's a solution to this that I'm not seeing.

What do you mean by stitched? Could you show me a picture?

That cabinet looks pretty cool, but it's also pretty expensive.

Google image search doesn't have an image for the 2x2 kind, but basically the disc wallets are attached directly to the outer shell rather than having a ring binder.

Maybe getting a motorized CD/DVD organizer?

There are ones that have USB connections and PC interface and you select through the application the name of the disc you want and voila!

But they might be too expensive :p

I bet you could find a small and cheaper cabinet somewhere on ebay.... Or you could always go to the closest flea market and simply get a piece of furniture that serves the same purpose (but doesn't have to be specifically designed for that)

What a monstrosity. I'm amazed there's a market for that, to be honest.

250 dics? lol. I have 700+ for my PC Engine alone, and everything is in nice perspective. Can't really see the problem.

Yeah, they seem to be huge!

I never saw one in person, nor do I know anyone who ever bought one, they could be useful if the capacity was of 500 - 1000 discs, but they are all in the range of 150 - 200 discs I believe.

I actually think some jukeboxes uses such a "monster" of a 250 disc changer. Even though a lot of "modern" jukeboxes uses some kind of internet connection. And finds the songs that way, but if you ask me, I would personally love to have such a a "monstrosity" mixed in with a computer who had an internet connection, since then I could probably get some of my music organised a lot better. Since I personally have at least 300+ music CDs at my place, and well then I could use the jukebox as a part of my stereo system that I already have, but I think I would rather get myself a 500+ CD changer instead of the 250 CD changer. Also why do I know there are jukeboxes with such a fellow in them ? well I have a habit of every now and then frequenting a pub (not any particular but just a noname pub) with my sister when Depeche Mode is in town, since then she has the habit of finding some little beer drinking place where she puts on a few songs , just for the heck of it. So, sorry for derailing the thread. But anyway there are markets for those "monstrosities".

Drinking beer, Depeche Mode, you what? Uh, obviously there's a market for jukeboxes. That wasn't...

    Ah, fuck it.

Since my gibberish went totally bonkers, then let me explain in plain English. Yes, there is a market for giant CD changers, even though in some ways it is yesteryear technology. Was that better Alchy ?

Oh yeah to all others, I concur with finding a good organising shelve of sort to your CDs and DVDs, I have four CD shelves, nothing as elaborate as what K-Panggg suggested, but four that is made out of wood painted black that holds 50 CDs each, that is why I know for a fact I have at least 200+ CDs in my apartment. I can sadly not find the CD shelf, that I have online, but anyway I have a simple but working CD shelf system for my CDs in wood.
