Got me a PS2 today cheap. Seems to get Disc read error often when trying to boot PS2 discs.
Have cleaned it and tried turning that white thingy on that change the lasers level according to some guide. Seemed to help (or so I thought) as I managed to boot Katamari.. thun I thought I should try to boot it again to verify and recived the error again >_<
Seems te be no problem with PSX/DVD discs. Any ideas?
Model# is SCPH-30004 if that helps.

I had a fat PS2 that after a few years of use started to give me the exact opposite problem ( dvd based Ps2 games and dvd movies worked fine, ps1 and cdrom based ps2 games would give me a DRE ). what i did to fix it was recalibrate my laser. Im not talking about adjusting the white cog, there are 2 screws that adjust the voltage going to the laser for cd and dvd baseed discs, i know that probably doesnt help much but i remember seeing a really in-depth guide about it somewhere, ill see if i can dig it up and post a link.

    WOOOOOO first post lol.

I keep looking at the pile of PS2 units I have, all the images I have taken and the PowerPoint app and thinking 'I'll make that guide soon'. I know I keep saying it, but I've put it off as there are SO many different versions of the PS2 that if I start, I know I'll be at this thing for hours & hours.

You can indeed adjust the laser using the two very small pots on the underside of the laser. The only issue with that is that there's a slim range. Turn it up to much and you burn your laser out, turn it down to low and you'll never calibrate it in a month of Sundays.

Cleaning, regreasing and adjusting the laser is the best thing you can possibly do. If the coil has turned black (burnt) then it is dead and nothing you do will bring it back to life.

Obtaining new 3rd party lasers is probably the simplest, if more costly solution, but if you can scrape another 6mths or a year out a laser then go for it!

Having to make such pot adjustments however is an indication that you'll be looking at a replacement sooner rather than later.

    P.S. Welcome skavenger216 ;-)

So after I got it working I put it together again and now controller port 1 has stopped working o_Ô
port 2 still works and port 1 only works some times for like one button push.
Is there some cable that could have gotten lose?

Yes, easily fixed - take the unit apart again. You can unscrew the 2 philips screws either side of the memory card /controller port you flip it over and check the IC is connected properly. Otherwise it's at the motherboard end. there is a bit of give in this cable, it's got enough length to move around so my bet its' at the controller port end. You may have just knocked it.

If it's at the PCB end, then you'll have to take everything to bits to get at the motherboard and re-seat the IC.

Got it working again! Thanks for the tips.

Opened it up and checked the cable, but it didn't look lose..
So I decided to take the whole beast apart and make a thorough cleaning of it. Everything went smooth no real problems.. until I were to put it together again and noticed the classic one-screw-to-much xD
    Couldn't find were it was supposed to go so I thought I should atleast test if the controller worked after the cleaning and reconnecting of all cables. So I connected everything and pressed the switch on the back. No reaction from the power LED. Strange I thought and decided to take it apart again, and when I came to the little board with the battery on I noticed that this is were the "extra" scew should be, and that I forgot to connect the cable that goes to the power/eject buttons ^_^;;
So with this misstakes corrected I tried again and everything worked great! :D

edit: Off to play some UmJammer Lammy :D
