No idea how they did it. Another friend of mine had a copy as well, but I sure haven't seen one since 1995 or 94. I recall the menu screen being a playfield from the original Mario Bros. and there being some weird issues in some of the games, but it worked like a charm mostly.

Boy, I miss the days when you could get really cool famiclones and clone stuff...
Also, there was this "Mario 4" that was really a hack of "Armadillo" - I had that one when I was like 11.

About disc system stuff, though... Many of my Commodore 5 1/4 s still worked last time I saw them. Is there a way to extract data from them to a current computer? I have two 5.25 drives on an old 286 - maybe usable in this process?

  2. Xerdo, there WAS a collection released for the SNES/SFC called Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Collection, respectively, that contained those exact 4 games. A lot less common is the cart that contains the Super Mario All-Stars collection PLUS Super Mario World.

Speaking of dodgy hacks, I saw the greatest pirated Mario hack a while back. Titled "Mario 14: Grand-dad" it featured the NES game The Flintstones, only Fred's head was replaced by Mario's from SMB3. :smt043

    Yeah, but there's no All-Stars for famicom/famiclone, it's SFC.
I'm talking about a bootleg collection, which I'm sure existed, though I've not seen one since 1995 I think. Maybe I'm going senile...? I'm gonna look around, someone else HAS to remembe this.

And some Mario hacks are great in a "Let's look at that flaming car wreck" sort of thing.
And of course, there's that "Rockman 6" that's Darkwing Duck but with a Yellow rockman instead of the terror that flaps in the night.

That (Darkwing, not the hacked one) was a great game...

i believe recent issue of UK RetroGamer magazine ran an article on Famicom disc system as well as some hack carts...

  5. There was more than one pirate multicart that had all the Mario games together on it, usually as you said, with a couple other sprite-swapped (or sometimes not even sprite-swapped) games masquerading as Mario games. The one I've seen was called Mario Family 10-in-1, it had a lot of stuff, I think including Dr. Mario and Golf (which does indeed have Mario in it) and also a game called Bio Miracle Bokkutsu, but which was listed on the cartridge as Baby Mario.

    Thanks, Sweater Fish!

While I vividly remember having this particular famiclone cart as a kid (no, mine didn't have golf or Baby Mario, but it did have the "trilogy" and the Japanese disc system SMB2, labeled "golden Mario") for a minute, I thought I was going insane or something because of the heat! (We are around 38 Celsius - that's about 102 Fahrenheit).

My cart, by the way, was either bright pink or bright orange. I remember having an oddly shaped Cyan cart of "Armadillo" named Mario 4 - with a Mario Sprite that turned into a Metroid-like ball.

Yup, that would have been my article on the Famicom. :)
(good lord, I hope no one notices the error I forgot to correct in that >_<, goemon began life in the arcades, not the msx!)

But yeah, Doki Doki was great fun when I played it as a kid.

Also, if you read RG regularly, there should be some coverage on the guy who runs that ads site. ;)

    EDIT:
I'd also like to point out that in South Africa, we had several really cool bootleg Famicom carts. We had a lot of FDS games that had been hacked and put onto stand-alone carts, such as SMB2 disk version.

We also had most of the USA exclusives that never made it to japan, such as Alien 3 and Snake's Revenge. But they were basically just the American games in Japanese FC cartridges.

Plus a wide selection of other wierd stuff.

God it was amazing, I still remember vividly as a kid, walking into these Famicom stores and there hundreds, literally hundreds, of Famicom cartridges on every shelf. I must admit, their bootlegs were of a very high quality. I'd say all this was, in part, thanks to the massive influx of people from Hong Kong.
