Heh. this might beat that wrestling game for PSP in loading time :p
If it's anything you want to forget about the old computer games it has to be the start up of them, there's nothing like a C64 tape reader acting up ;)
Never had a amiga but looks about as bad there with disk swapping.

most games were 2-3 floppys so it was not that bad. also you could used Hdds or multiple floppyes at the same time

I must admit, this is an example of one of the worse offenders - most Amiga games were much more sensible.

That looks like the OCS/ECS version of UFO:EU - wasn't there an AGA/CD32 version released? While a disk-based AGA release would look much nicer, it wouldn't fix the disk swapping issue - it may even make it worse, what with the better graphics.

it IS the AGA version, probably on a Amiga 1200 without HD.
The kickstart version gives it away, Kick 3 was introduced with the A1200/4000 range, iirc the 3000 still had kick 2.x
Kick 2 was really bad though, you needed kick 2.1 to boot from hd, but most A600 only had kick 2.0. That meant, you could install a HD inside the A600, but not use it as a boot device without upgrading the kickrom. Damn.
(Somehow, through clever trickery, my old external HDD for my A500 with Kick 1.3 got around this though. But reformatting and installing it was a royal pain in the butt, had to edit all kinds of paths manually)

    There is no kickstart 2.1.
There is only kickstart 2.04 and kickstart 2.05.

But you're right, the early a600's didn't have hd support in kickstart & there was no official retail upgrade.

The 3000 came with either kickstart 1.4 or kickstart 2.04, depending on when it was made. Kickstart 1.4 was only used for booting the menu that allowed you to select soft loading of kickstart 1.3 or kickstart 2.0 off disk.

Relokick allowed you to run kickstart from your ranger memory at c00000. There was also a boot disk with kickstart 2.0 on it that worked in a similar way, but it was buggy.

You could also use blizkick ( if you had a blizzard accelerator ) to boot any rom, or there were mmu based programs that allowed it too.

I ran kickstart 2.05 on my a500 for a while, which I saved to floppy in tandy's one saturday & after that I got a kickstart 3.0 from dixons. Eventually I bought a kickstart 3.1 set.

    Oh the memories.

btw, as he's obviously running in WinUAE then all bets are off as to what the hardware is that he's emulating.

I tend to agree with smf, and if I recall correctly. Then now adays you can get amiga (harddrive) installation files to a lot of games already via the internet. I just can´t seem to remember the name of the forum, where you can get those files from.

By the time the game came out Hard Drives or at least multiple drives were around so it wasn't as bad as it seems. Loading multiload tapes back on the Sinclair Spectrum 48K was more a pain, especially outrun, load main part, select options, load first stage, end first stage, find next track, fast forward, stop, rewind, stop, play, wait, etc

I remember the Street Fighter games on the Amiga. 8 disks or so, 4 or 5 swaps per match, and inbetween round swaps.

I had a 15MB HDD in my A600. It was only ever used for the OS. The games would not run from the OS, so it was useless for that.

    What a whiny little git.

Bah you youngsters don't appreicate loading a game in and then playing it even if it was dire just because you spent the last 5 minutes waiting for it to load and you were damn sure you were going to play it for at least half an hour.

Awww, I remember xcom on the Amiga :) I had a small 30 mb hard drive for my A500. By far the worst game from memory (this game was more for my younger siblings) was Noddy's Big Adventure. Although only 4 disks this game literally needed to load a disk (usually again) on changing every screen.
