Divers 2000

I'm just curious if Sega have ever released any information about the design of the Divers 2000 CX-1? Basically, why?

It's surely the most amazing looking console ever created, and I was wondering if there were any interviews with the system desiners or anything to explain why they designed such a radical looking console. Have Sega ever said anything about what the design represents or why they made such a crazy looking machine?

 

I read it was meant to be based around the aliens from Space Channel 5 but if that is true then why call it a divers?

The complete name is Fuji Television Divers 2000 Series CX-1. About the design I've read it's made to look like a Morolian from Space Channel 5, but also I've read on other interpretations on this like Sonic or the mascot of Fuji Television, a blue dog.

 

Did I hear once that the picture is in composite??

If so that is a shame uhh.
