I recently purchased V4 "Envy" Backlight http://www.nonelectronics.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10&products_id=177 My solder points appear to be fine, but I am having issues with contrast and functionality demonstrated in the pictures here: http://imgur.com/a/gBDwV#0 With no resistor in the screen the game will not boot properly. However, if I have the resistor, the contrast is horrible and I can barely see the game at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I would suspect if you are not getting enough contrast the contrast knob needs cleaning (improper resistance being sent)
Would that cause the game not booting thing with the lack of resistor? Edit: Reflow fixed the contrast, but the no resistor thing is still weird
Oh, forgive me I got lost in the contrast issue alone. I should have read properly. I was fixated on only the contrast issue. The no boot with game is a more basic issue to address first. Resistor or not. 1. Did the system work fine with that game prior to modding? If you never checked, change carts. Your contacts in the system may need cleaning or may be worn out. 2. If it did work, possibly you have joined voltage to ground when you did the soldering in this picture here. http://imgur.com/a/gBDwV#1 I would say if you never tested the system before modding, revert to stock and check the system. If it does not function in the stock config, you have an unrelated system issue. Try a few games, you could have a bad game or even bad contacts. A worn cart will often give this error. Try some carts and get back.
I mean that the same set up works with the resistor and games boot, but without the resistor it will not boot games
I'm looking for the install docs and they seem to have none posted. The so called tutorial video is useless. Post the install docs they gave you.
Lol, yeah, they just linked me to the videos. They didn't give me any docs. I guess I am fine with the resistor installed, but would have preferred the extra brightness from not using it. Maybe I will try experimenting with some resistors, the one I received is 68 ohm so I will try to see how low I can go with the system remaining functional. Really odd problem though.
Have you contacted them for support? I got this answer below when asking about the proper resistors, but I'm not sure those values are correct. On some installs I had to put two resistors in series to get proper contrast. Those units have been sold though and I didn't take notes :/ "You should use 68ohm for DMG backlights in Sapphire, Emerald and Snow, 47ohm for Sunshine, Pumpkin, Crimson and Magenta. For the Pockets, it is the same color division, but use 680ohm and 470ohm, respectively."
