So after discovering my TOOL had the DNAS enabled ROM, I wanted to explore how far I could go with it. I found a pretty damn cheap HDD kit new-in-box, So why not. Well so far I can go... not so far lol. popped in my FFXI Collectors 2008 end. Didn't even get passed Install. DNAS threw error 401 "Invalid Ps2 Hardware".(Now to wait for Sony to bust down my door) Now I half expected that. But the reason I even tried was because my TOOL has the dnas functions in the rom. I assume for debugging games with DNAS. But if it has the functions, why the error? doesn't seem very productive to devs if dnas is just going to say "lol what are you doing". Now maybe its just FFXI. but I would think I would get a PoL error, not dnas. I saw the post regarding FFXI SoA on JP consoles with NA codes, but the only info on debug stations was about NA client/JP expansion conflicts. So ultimate question. Sony took the time to add DNAS functions to the TOOL's ROM. even named it dnas300.bin, So why deny the TOOL dnas authentication?
An educated guess from me: The TOOL's MECHACON doesn't support some commands, so the DNAS checks might be bailing out on some of its tests. Maybe Silverbull or someone else who actually owns a TOOL would have a direct answer to your question. If you booted a DNAS-enabled retail game, it doesn't care about what ROM you have as it'll reset the IOP with its own IOPRP image. The flash ROM of the TOOL is supposed to contain compatible modules for the SDK that is being used for development. If you flashed DNAS300.bin into the TOOL, you're supposed to be using the DNAS v3.00 SDK... that's all.
The memory is vague, but now that I think of it. the first tool I had passed a dnas test with the network disc iirc. Cause I rememer thinking "This is so silly, going online with the TOOL, that's not gonna throw red flags on sony's side /sarcasim"
Exactly. All TOOL's I have seen so far do not support MagicGate decryption. Even the first command, to start downloading the KELF file header, fails with an error status. I would expect that there are (or were?) TOOLs with MagicGate enabled; but if I had to guess, I'd say nobody outside Sony ever got one. There was really no need for external developers to play around with that facility. For testing, there were always the corresponding DTL-Hx010x TESTs available (pun intended :tears_of_joy, so I dare to say that even inside Sony, MagicGate-capable TOOLs would have been quite rare. Yes. Besides, there is no need to go through the normal DNAS launch mechanism (DNASLOAD) during development. One could simply start the main executable via the debugger.
Ah good information. but at the same time, frustrating. cause I'm quite positive my first TOOL passed a DNAS test. It could have been one of the speculated MagicGate enabled TOOLs It was a few years back, sucker cost me 1200USD. Didn't know much about it back then. so eventually $1200 looked a lot better than a big conversation piece. Doubt I could find the buyers info.
well this is a first. funny stuff, I was trying out other DNAS games, popped in World Champion Poker. game didn't start but, it did send a msg to dsedb, and I quote "Running on T10k!". Cool that a dev would take the time to check what system your running then go further to tell you, even with exclamation. Getting just black screen on ps2 side. no breakpoint though. just that msg
Success! pulled out the docs, and was messing with boot parameters. reset f0033 100 did the trick (I'm using component so will be deferent for composite) Passed all DNAS tests. Originally f0032 worked (disable debuging, component out, restrict to 32MB,start disc) but threw "MaxSema" exception. as a last resort I enabled stack checking. witch I doubted had anything to do with my problem. but after restart, everything passed. and FFXI is instaling to the HDD.
Congratulations :encouragement:. I stand corrected, there are apparently TOOLs that support MagicGate. At least one :love_heart:. What's the model number? DTL-H10000H?
this makes me wonder if magic gate is only a software system on the rom? If so then any tool should be able to support magic gate, i may try to reset my tool with those settings and a dnas rom
"DTL-T10000H A" It has a sticker on the back that I have not seen on other TOOLs, says "If found call SCEA" and provides a number. After a quick skype, the number is to some "IT service desk pager" at Sony. The msg does not seem to be consumer oriented.
Magicgate support is dependent on the firmware stored within the mask ROM of the MECHACON chip. There is no known way to replace or to tamper with the content of that mask ROM. If your TOOL doesn't support those commands, it won't ever support them. Likewise, most TEST units (DTL-HX0000 models) won't ever fully support Magicgate and are probably not able to pass the Sony DNAS checks.
DNAS and MAGIC GATE are two different animals. TOOLs can auth DISC IDs from any retail disc it supports so passing disc DNAS checks aren't really anything incredible... lol Still to run FFXI on your tool you need a way to boot PlayOnline viewer and that one uses HDD DNAS, a yet another DRM system which relies on MAGIC GATE to protect it's loader...
The original DNAS faliure was -401 "Invalid PS2 Hardware" so I assume the disc passed, but it rejected the TOOL. PoL and FFXI are up and running . waiting on Original Vanadiel collection and SoA from japan. (Currently installed from the USA Vana Col) Also, you may ask "Why run ffxi on a TOOL" I won't be really playing it on the TOOL that much, just for historical sake. I can say I played the last game on the PS2 (SoA).
You used the install disk to launch POL, right ? That was not a possibility originally. Think about that. Edit: When you use the disc, you're skipping completely any need to deal with MAGIC GATE.
Makes sense. Thank you for the info "The more you know" Edit: I started ffxi on pc. and just happen to purchase the 2008 Vana Col, for my collection.(ps2 and FF freak) So I always booted off disc. I guess I missed the time where that was not possible. but I do remember someone telling me, I did not need the disc.
The reason Square Enix changed PlayOnline to work like that is that with PSBBN installed on a PS2 it takes you almost 5 minutes to boot the console, load PSBBN, launch POL and then log into the game. It was a real DRAG for people who used the PS2 mostly to play the game (people like me for example). So they changed the install disc so it would work similarly to how the XBOX360 disc works. That launch method was introduced in 2005 with the Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus (and for FFXI with Chains of Promathia). Oh man how I loathe PSBBN and it's slowness ... I have the standard OSD installed on my FFXI PS2.
