I'm trying to decide on which system to get for Christmas for myself. They both have ups and downs. I mainly collect 90's and older consoles, might get either a Wii or a PS3. I have a PS2 already and enjoy it much. I'd love to play Harmony Of Despair for PS3. At the same time I really want to try a new Mario Kart and Super Mario. What do you guys prefer?

I personally bought a Wii first, once you install the homebrew channel you can emulate Nes, Snes, Mega Drive, etc. There were some great games released on it but I guess PS3 has got a better library and better graphics...
Wii is going to be a lot cheaper too

If you plan to get a PS3, make sure you get one of those bundles with one or two games + 1 year of PlayStationPlus.

As for the Wii, i bet you can find a used one for very cheap, specially in the US. But if you really enjoy Mario games,i think you should get a WiiU. Super Mario World 3D seems to be an amazingly fun game. Plus the WiiU is backwards compatible.

First off, let me ask this:

What is your intended purpose for either console when you purchase whichever one you decide to buy? If you are looking for something that you can use for homebrew/emulation purposes, I would go with the Nintendo Wii. However, if you are looking for a console that has games that you want to play not only for the single-player mode but for the multiplayer, I would honestly pass on the Wii for the Playstation 3 considering the Wii's online support in my opinion is quite lackluster. Granted, you can home-brew the Playstation; however, good luck trying to do that if you don't know where to look because the process can be quite mind-numbing.

What for games are you looking for? I know you mentioned that you wanted to play the newer Mario games for the Wii as well Mario Kart Wii, but are there any titles for the Playstation 3 that would sway your decision towards its direction? You are doing what I basically did when we entered the last generation of gaming consoles. I personally collect Nintendo products; however, I also enjoy playing my fair share of games online with friends who simply didn't buy the Wii or didn't buy the games with online support that I have in my own personal library of games. I mean, both consoles have a decent lineup of games that you can easily pick up and play; however, I've found that the better Wii titles such as Xenoblade Chronicles fetch a more expensive price tag.

Are you looking to import titles? If you are looking to keep import titles for the Wii but you decide not to go the route of home-brew, you can almost kiss those chances goodbye. This is only thing that I think you would hate about the Wii since it doesn't natively support a region-free environment without the need of home-brew. The Playstation 3 on the other hand is region-free, so if you like playing games from say, Japan or Europe, you can. Not only that, you can create different accounts for the Playstation 3 for the PS Store and you can purchase gift cards to buy games from another country's online store. I actually did this to purchase Biohazard 5 and Metal Gear Solid Integral to add to my import collection.

What it all really boils down to is personal preference. I own both consoles and they get their fair-share of use when I have the time to sit down and play something. I personally feel as if they are both solid consoles and are worth the price tag but it all boils down to what all you are going to do with your newly purchased console and what features capture your attention the most.

To just look at price, where I live you can pick up a used wii for about $50 with a wii mote and sensor bar ect. Cheapest ps3 I have seen is like $200

I think you should go for a Wii U. I've thought about buying one myself, just for Super Mario 3D Land and Wind Waker HD. There aren't a ton of good games right now, but there are some good ones coming out in the future. The new SSB game should be coming out next year. And like Johnny said, it's backwards compatible with Wii games (not Gamecube games, though).

PS3 has some good games too, but I think it'd be a little weird to buy a PS3 exactly at the same time the PS4 comes out.

"Some" PS3 generation has a ton of good games. Even if only count exclusives.

Wii U will never get a lot of games, but maybe enough for nintendo fan.

PS3 for sure, the Wii's library is bad - even the Nintendo-made games, with some exceptions like Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 and Smash Bros Brawl, range from nothing special (Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3) to utter shit (Mario Kart Wii, pretty much everything that relies entirely on motion control). The main reason to get a Wii nowadays is to use it for emulation.

Yeah I have a lot to think about. The wii u seems interesting but I'm not sure how much I like that big ass controller screen thing. Seems kinda clunky. I may lean towards a PS3 just because my brother recently got one and we could play games together online. But I am more into 2-D side scrolling games such as the mario games. I don't think either have many of those kind of games. I don't really use emulators either.

Well, Wii have some good exclusives: Zelda, Metroid, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, the ResidentEvil Chronicles and Remakes.

    LittleBigPlanet 2 is neverending 2D anything :D
Also Rayman Origins/Legends, Puppeteer and several PSN titles.
Wii has Mario, Donkey Kong and Kirby.

It depends on whether you want to play games that use a wiimote/nunchuck/balance board or games that use a standard game controller (the six axis on the ps3 isn't used much).

I'd say it depends on if you like RPGs compared to platformers. PS3 has a huge list of good RPGs (Tales of Xilla, Disgia, Dragons Crown to name a few...) While the wii has good platformers such as Super Mario Galaxy and Kirby.

It's a pretty awesome system and it's library is only going to get better after this year. You got Rayman Legends which was originally developed for Wii U and is the better version, Wonderful101, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D world, Windwaker HD, New Luigi U, Sonic Lost World, Lego City Undercover, plus the Wii U is showing lots of support for indie games and has its own indie exclusives like Mighty Switch Force, Mutant Mudds, Shovel Knight, Gianna Sisters etc.

WiiU is starting to look great. I'd definitely go for a Wii and PS3 though, both can be had for cheap. The current console transition period means it's a good time to catch up on anything you would have missed. A great library of games can be amassed for both consoles, recently trimmed down my current inventory for the Wii and really happy with it:

    Wii:
    Resident Evil 4
    REmake
    Rhythm Heaven
    Sin and Punishment 2
    Kirby's Adventure
    Donkey Kong Country Returns
    Xenoblade

Wasn't hugely into Mario Galaxy, 3D World looks amazing though.

Why not get both? Gamestop is selling a barebones Wii system for $40 on Black Friday if you have a membership, which should drive down the Craigslist prices somewhat. If you are searching Craigslist, at best make sure the $60ish high comes with games and controllers. Don't forget to pick up a SD card if you want it for emulation purposes, and you'll be playing in less than two hours provided you follow the instructions.

The PS3 is less than $200 easy by now, make sure you get a slim version, especially if you worry about your power bill. I got mine for about $150 with two controllers and two games.
