Collect for the sake of collecting, not for the value others give to it.

I plan to keep and play my stuff for many years as a collector, I don't buy to make a profit, it's those people who have made the hobby become very expensive. :/

IMHO, older systems & games will tend to fare better...& also the occasional very-hard-to-get rare item for newer systems

In general, newer systems aren't really worth collecting as games have become so mainstream that heaps of games are released every month...there'll be so many titles 10 years from now, & most of these old games will then need to compete for gamer dollars. Gamers will most likely spend their money on new games, unless of course if they have heaps of money to burn...but the way things are going in this world...I'd say money's getting harder to earn..therefore less people are likely to have a substantial disposable income...

Furthermore, the population in developed countries are stabilising (even decreasing in countries like Japan)...so less people (ie. demand)...less money...but substantially more supply due to a flood of games & their massive print runs...

Most collectibles aren't really worth collecting...values are always based on perceived scarcity (most aren't....but I do agree there are some truly rare games/systems/collectibles out there).

But with all that being said..I'm still a collector myself...simply because it makes me happy...n well, some stuff really are rare..:)

I expect that it'll depend on what you collect, A Turbografx collection will probably hold up muck better than a NES collection since the TG has always been obscure, but I doubt that boxed base systems will ever be worth more than the equivalent NES since they were available new long after the system was dead. I also expect that working Game Gears will go up substantially as more systems die.

The cheaper games get, the better for me. I prefeer having to spend 5$ in a game rather than 50$.

I collect for fun and to make money. There are some things I will never get rid of like Conker's BFD. I'm still waiting to stumble upon a copy of Mega Man X 3. There is no way I'm paying $75 for a beat up cart. I try to keep up on all the rare games and their value to supplement some income. It's easy money and I rather sell it to someone who actually appreciates it for what it is, then just keeping it boxed up and safe. I like the hunt and who knows maybe I'll come across a copy of stadium events.
