    and Not Rockman?
World Wide he's Mega Man but only in Japan he's Rockman.
So why did Capcom feel so compelled to rename?

I'm an expert on all things mega but this is the only question that stumps even me.

Inafune-san did say the name is two fold.

The Gameplay dynamic is rock paper sissors but also Rock as in music.

Which also explains Roll, Bass, Treble, Blues and so on.

and also why every game has awesome music that isn't Rockman and Forte.

Because back in the day the belief was that foreign products and media in particular (not just videogames) wouldn't be successful in the US unless it was "Americanized". Thankfully this type of thinking is much less prevalent but it still rears its head now and again.

    Megaman/Rokkuman wiki :)

Mega Man first being called "Mega" is a localization error which compromises the "rock and roll" reference. It was canonically stated in the U.S. release of Mega Man 4 that his original name was "Rock" (which is also mentioned in Mega Man for Game Gear).

Not that it clears up your question, but maybe interesting enough to post.

How can one make an error like to localize "Rock" to "Mega"? I don't get it, although a "Rock Drive" would have been great to own.

Maybe rock and mega can both be seen as a translation/meaning of 'hard/strong' kinda

For all you kids that are just out of diapers (which seems to be everyone but me and Yakumo), I'll lay down 1000 yen that the reason he's not "Rockman" in the states is due to the well known term in the 80's (also Rockman), which was slang for "crack dealer". It was popularized in one of those shitty Sir Mix-a-lot songs. No fucking way would anyone associate a character that could (possibly at the time) spawn an unforgivable amount of sequels with that.

But yeah, the main characters are named after parts of music. "Rock", "Forte", etc. Maybe there's a pianissimo thrown in there somewhere.

except Sir-Mix-a Lot had ONE popular song (Baby got back) which does not state the word 'rock' and that was in the 90's.

It's a good thing they changed the name to Mega Man then, otherwise that stage where you sell Crack to children would have been severely misunderstood.

I believe this could be part of the reason, but another might have been that "Rockman" I believe was in use by some company over here for some other product.

"Mega Man" as the words are always seperated, i.e. here:

And "Rockman" as it was always written as one word:

There are exceptions though (like some SNES-versions). But who cares so much about a space more or less anyway :033:
