Yes! A very rare thing! A new thread by me, Blur2040.

    Anyhoo...

Does anybody play Nethack, the life consuming, dungeon crawling, D&D based RPG?

I've played it a ton lately...and well...it's awesome. Quick to play, incredibly fun, and they thought of EVERYTHING. I'm still surprised by all of the cool stuff that you can do.

My current high score is somewhere in the 19000s...and I've yet to ascend!

I hope somebody else plays and I don't sound like a crazy man.

I'm going to sound very shallow here, but I just can't bring myself to get into the game. I don't *think* it's the graphics (I downloaded Falcon's Eye, and I don't care for it, either), it's mainly the difficulty and amount of different options there are. It's a very complex game.

Never got into Nethack but I did enjoy a few hours of Angband every once in a while, a long long while ago.

Eh, I don't think it's too bad. You just have to learn to be very careful. Drinking Potions or reading scrolls, or spellbooks, or anything can be cursed, or be just plain bad for you.

For a beginner, I'd recommend starting with a valkyrie (sp?) They seem to have really high hit points and are just generally good fighters.

Here are some basic, important controls though:

Note: Commans are case sensitive. "w" is weild, but "W" is wear. Also, any time you have to choose an item and are presented with a list of letters representing items, you can always push "?" to get a more detailed list (with names and such).

    i ... view your inventory

s ... search press this button to spend your turn searching for secret doors on the edge of the room or traps out in the middle (it may take a few searches)

w .... weild a weapon (be careful, a cursed weapon might weld itself to your hand)

q .... quaff (drink) drink potions and from fountains and sinks...and whatever else you might want to drink

e .... eat This is independent from your HP. You'll start fainting and eventually die if
you don't eat. Once again, use sense. Some food could be cursed, but generally
you're safe with things you pick up. Just eat what sounds good. Apples,
Lichens, Food Rations: YES. Jackals, Dogs, Zombies: NO.

t .... throw an item. Good with darts and daggers and such. You can throw
    anything you want tough.

r .... read a scroll or spellbook. Scrolls are like one time spells, and Spellbooks teach you a magic spell you can use over and over again

o .... open a door. Follow that up with a direction key to indicate the direction of the door

P .... put on a ring or amulet. You can wear two rings and one amulet. once again, be careful of cursed ones

A .... take stuff off...brings up a prompt screen to tell you what you have on

a .... use or apply...use tools like leashes, whistles, pick axes, whatever

Z .... presents a listing of magic spells you can use

    z .... use a magic wand

@ .... toggle auto pickup on and off, useful when you get deeper in and guys are dropping piles of stuff...much of which you don't want. it'll just bog you down

    d .... drop items

, .... pick up items when you have auto pickup on or off

CTRL D ....Kick follow this up with a direction. this can be used to open locked doors and chests

"#loot" ... type this in to crack open a chest you might be standing on to get the contents out

Oh yeah!!! The Most Important, useful one for beginners.

? (when not in any other menu) brings up the help menu where it tells you all about the game in a more drawn out fashion

I think I got most of the important ones

So ends my crusade in favor of nethack.
