just a little tip... be careful with the power/eject cable... they can break very easily...

I thought it meant a screwed up laser arm... anyhow, if you wouldn't have threatened CJPC with legal action, I bet *he* would be the man to ask ;-)

Sounds like someone's being playing the GTAs too much on these PS2s!

    Hello Assembler,

Another point we may want to consider when repairing PS2 (apart from cleaning the lens with alcohol and adjust the laser) is the rails that carry the laser block.

2 years ago I had the receptionist of my company asking if I knew anything about PS2 since I am in software sales. I said "yeah they are crap and breakdown all the time" only this time her son though it would be intelligent to put a can of Coke on top of the console!!! Imagine the result!!! And it was no Diet Coke!!!

The whole thing was covered with sugar!!! Hopefully all the electronic remained safe so I cleaned all the crap on the mechanics and interior. I tested and it worked first and then the damn thing kept failing, so after 2000 cleaning sessions, I found my self loosing patience and found out that the 2 rails holding the lens block were actually playing a very important role in placing the lens at the right position. So I cleaned the rails few time with alcohol and all the small holes they are passing through of course they were covered with sugar. I then added a bit of grease and that was it, a happy kid again, though to play Fifa anyway...

One thing I discovered on my PS2 which I was given for free as dead is that the grease that Sony put on the rails is actually drying overtime. So after a few years (or months in some cases) the laser can't travel very well from one place on the CD/DVD to another.

    Hope this helps.

i know the little plastic arm that locates the lacer can bend over time. a fix ive heard of is heating it with a lighter slightly and gently bending it back.
