!! DOES ANYONE know where to get replacement Xbox CD-Rom drives?

Discussion in 'The ASSEMblergames Marketplace' started by Benedict_Arnold, Nov 21, 2005.

  1. My friend apparently screwed up his Philips CD-Rom drive to his xbox. It doesn't read discs. I put in another friend's Xbox Thomson CD-Rom drive and it boots fine. Therefore I need to find a CD-Rom drive for the Xbox. Anyone have one or know where to get one? Can be used as long as it works.

llama has a site that sells 'em, and they're always on ebay.

  4. But it's so much easier if someone tells me of a trusted place or has one on hand.

BA, I have used www.llamma.com about 6 times now. Over the last 3 years I have bought over 64 drives from them. If you can try to get the Samsung over the Phillps and Thompson and LG.
Or you can try differerent media. Head over to the www.xbox-scene.com forums, they have a good list of Drives/Media compatability.

Expensive part.. you might as well mod it while you're at it,

  7. When you say mod it, you mean buy a mod case and somehow put in a regular DVD Drive? (Can you do that? I haven't kept up with the Xbox scene)

EDIT: $129 for a Samsung drive! Holy SH*T!

As far as capabilities go, modding the samsung 616f/616t is the best way to go if he's a power user. It reads all types of media at a speed faster than any xbox drive. If you want to keep it simple, go for a 1st-gen samsung 605 drive or a 2nd-gen philips drive which works as well as the original samsung 605.

ebay usually has a lot of drives on sale but whatever you do, don't get a thomson. lots of other shops sell parts, its just a matter of shopping around. check the trusted sites list on the xbox-scene homepage since all those sites have a fairly good reputation.

and yes, you can put in a regular PC DVD-ROM drive but you will not be able to read original xbox dvds with it, only CD-R and dvd backups. pc drives cannot read the original disks because of the copy protection.

Just get one from eBay. You can usually get them cheap. I bought a replacement PS for my debug kit from "eboxenhancements" on there and it looks like he has a bunch of DVD drives at reasonable prices.

  11. Thanks for the tip about eboxenhancements. He has samsung drives for $49. Thomson for $14.

i meant parts as in xbox parts (like dvd drives), not dvd drive parts.

Why don't you just buy a whole other xbox off me? I have a bunch here for sale.

  14. Where's the link to the Xboxes for sale? I see you have a fundraiser where I asked about a Space Orb. It would also be worthwhile if someone had a chipped xbox for sale. My other friend fried his somehow and I really don't want to install a modchip. I'm anti-modchip and soldering these little circuits are too difficult.
