Can you live without achievements?

um, just turn the notifications off.

having friends go on and offline is way more annoying and can ruin the mood of a game. usually if i'm doing i single player game that i want to be engrossed in, i just turn off notifications so nothing bothers me. it's not hard to do.

i just think getting achievements is fun, sue me. i've played a ton of games i would have never touched just to try and get achievements and i've found some awesome games. they also get me more entertainment and fun for my dollar. take Halo: Reach for example. Normally in an Halo game i play the campaign once and then it's just multiplayer from there on out. but now, because of achievements, i've played through the campaign three times. and plan on completing it a few more times.

i've also found myself looking at games that have been sitting on my shelf, dusting them off and enjoying them all over again to try and 100% them.

achievements aren't bad, i just think people look at them wrong, or have friends that are stupid about them. henners says i take them too far, how dare you say what i can have fun with or not! :p

sir, you played through horrible games knowing they're horrible just to boost your score. :p but hey, whatever floats your boat. I dress up as a Power Ranger and you play Avatar the last airbender.

I like what reach has done, they have daily challenges. They're KINDA like achievements (do this this and this) but you get ingame credits. It's like the old days, where you actually get something for your efforts! yay!

hahaha, the last airbender was literally 2 minutes of pressing x. i didn't PLAY the game. if you had free rentals and there was nothing good out at the time what would you do?

i don't play the terrible games, i usually can't make it through them. games like Eragon and Jumper that have EASY achievements i couldn't even finish because they were so bad.

and you can't say anything about the sports games because i actually like football and basketball and those games. lol.

Why I'd do what I usually do... play something AWESOME out of my amazing back library of games. :p That's why I hardly beat most modern games...they don't hold my attention, if I get bored with a game I just turn it off and put something I love in. haha

You dont HAVE to play games either get it? in fact theres only a short list of things you actually cant stop doing:rolleyes:

I'll take anything instead of archievements, even secret endings and shit, at least those are entertaining, like the ones in SH2

But if you love to waste your time with pointless achievements that give you nothing go ahead, I dont give a fuck...

It's an interesting case for me regarding achievements. On the one hand, I see no real reason for me to get 100% completion on most games - I tend to try for most of the standard gameplay achievements and possibly all the gameplay unlockables (such as completing all missions). The only ones I aim for 100% completion is the kind of games you 'nibble' at on a lunch break, like Bejeweled or UNO.

On the other hand, the existence of achievements pushes me to play games on the 360 over any of my other consoles and adds to the replay value of games that I would have played through and then put down. It's certainly pushed me to play further and longer into some games. Also, if you have a friend who's got the same games as you, it's nice to have these mini-battles over who's experienced more of a particular game. The big number, in my mind, doesn't really matter (especially as he's about 3 complete games ahead of me, the git).

So, I've gone with 'NO I CAN'T', because in the end - whilst I feel relatively little for gamerscore - I like the challenge it poses. Sure, you can play kiddie games to get achievements, but TBH you're just cheating yourself out of playing enjoyable games. They just act as a mark on your record showing how low you'll stoop to pretend to be better than your friends (of course, if your friends haven't played these games, then it is they who are significantly better than you).

I don't care about them, but I am not online with any console. Maybe this would be different if I'd join an online gaming community?

Anyway, I just play for my own goals: completing a game 100% (like GTA), beating a certain score or completing it on one credit (shooters) etc.

I think achievements are a nice innovation to make gamers play their games more though. It's definitely a very intelligent strategy of Microsoft and Sony to make their consoles and games interesting over a longer timeframe than before - not all the point-whores of today were just as hardcore when there were no points they could brag with. If you see it that way, both sides benefit from these bonus systems.

Still, achievements and trophies don't mean shit to me, I can motivate myself :p

This is not about playing 100% of a game, its about how you play it. It's the difference between getting something out of playing the entire game, like it used to, and getting nothing but a stupid sign and meaningless points, which is what achievements do.

Is like before you could get the equivalent of a DLC (couple secret levels, etc) for playing the entire game, while today they sell you the DLC on the grounds of having more achievements to complete, its absurd!

It's not like you have to buy that stuff to get the full experience. Secret stages or costumes are still in the game, but at the same time there's even more stuff that can be had online. Maybe there is less, but I don't know too much about next-gen gaming anyways.
As long as modern games don't REQUIRE me to be online and collect achievements to proceed in a game, I don't care about that kinda shit. Once they start doing that, I'll quit buying new games, as easy as that! :D

I don't really understand what you're saying. Just to clarify, it sounds like you're saying achievements are to blame for developers not including secret areas, endings, items, etc. in their games? DLC would be more to blame than anything. And developers don't add DLC JUST to add achievements. They have to have the achievements according to Microsoft's rules.

I think you're looking at this all wrong. I'd say the problem with the achievements are a lot of developers don't really care about them so they do reward them for normal tasks in a game.

Who cares about the "Press Start" achievement in The Simpsons? I mean, c'mon it's The Simpsons, it was meant to be humorous. Not all achievements are equal. There's a lot of achievements in games that are just meant to be funny and have a joke in their description. It's whatever.

I'm currently registered on a site called TrueAchievements. They have a formula that changes how much achievements are worth based on how many registered users have whichever achievement. For example say you get an achievement worth 100g for completing a campaign on Normal. Most people will have that. So it's only worth 100g. Now say you get 100g for completing the campaign on the hardest difficulty. Fewer people will have that so according to the TrueAchievement formula that achievement could be worth 350g or something. It all adds up to a TrueAchievement score which can then be changed into a ratio and really show the real achievements you've unlocked. The tough ones, the ones that take effort and skill.

Lol, sorry for the wall of text. I just got carried away.

I'm always surprised by the Trophy Icon when it shows on the upper corner of the screen. I don't have nothing againtst Trophies / Achievements, but it's not something that i feel the need to collect. If i get one trophy, cool. If not, no problem.

For example, i started playing Uncharted before i had my PS3 connected online. Because of this, i didn't got the 1.01 patch that added trophies support. But after i installed the 1.01 patch, only new saves would make me get trophies. So, would i restart the game just because of that? No. Will i play the game again someday? Yes. When that happens if i get any trophies, that's ok.

Also some of those trophies / achievements are either lame or extremely difficult, not to mention that some require the DLCs stages / missions.

I'm not at all bothered by Achievements, but I too enjoy getting Trophies.
Also I'm not fussed about a online scoreboard.....just a personal one will do me!

It would be better if you could some how build up credit using achievements/trophies to use on psn/live.

I haven't achieved many things in my life, and I'm not about to start counting shit within a video game - qualitatively or quantitatively.

I hardly strive for them, but it's cool to have them. Though once in a while, "let's try to get this achievement" happens.

Ha! Your an ass for having that game even on your list. Thats just sad.

But I do agree with you on your pov on achievements. Tons of the games I own I would have never gone back to if it hadn't been to try and complete their achievements. GTA4 for example... worst GTA (out of the 3D ones) so after I beat the main story I didn't play it for years. But ended up going back and quite enjoying some of the things I missed.
