I was just curious if it needed to pack to run donkey kong and others. Better to find out before I get another 64
The expansion pak will still be needed for games that require it, the ed64 does not provide the system with additional memory
Like Kuze says, the Everdrive doesn't replace the expansion pak, you still need it to play Donkey Kong 64 and Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (the only two N64 games that can't work without an expansion pak). The Everdrive will work without an expansion pak, but you can't play DK64 or Majora's Mask without the expansion pak. It is well worth buying an expansion pack though, as lots of other games use it to add more features or a higher graphical resolution. Perfect Dark is all but pointless without an expansion pack (the single player doesn't work, and the multiplayer is very cutdown, so you *need* an expansion pack for Pefect Dark), plus the Everdrive can't run Banjo Tooie unless you use a patched version of the game, and the patched version can't run without an expansion pack, so that's four good reasons to have an expansion pack (DK64, Majora's Mask, Perfect Dark and Banjo Tooie), plus the number of tracks in Rush 2049 goes up from five to six if you have an expansion pack, lots of games look better with the graphical enhancement they offer for the expansion pack, etc.
I'll make this simple and easy. All the ED64 does is emulate a game cart for loading a dumped game file. It also does a few other things like Game Genie now but then again all of this is basically emulating carts. It doesn't add and hardware for other operations. so the ED64 itself doesn't need the expansion pack to run but games that needed it to run still do need it.
