This has got to be my luckiest ''In-the-wild'' find.
This dethrones the time I found a perfect condition Harvest moon 64 in a trash can.

Donkey Kong 64 NFR Demo Cart.
I did not even know what I was buying, I was just wondering why the cart was not yellow.
Sure it is not in perfect condition but at 5$ I cannot complain.

It wouldn't be yellow, because yellow was a limited run. Along with being a demo cart.

You're not in Toronto are you? I went to a yard sale in the Beaches area once and the woman was an ex-Nintendo employee selling some schwag, I bought 2x NFR Episode 1 race, 2x NFR Mario Tennis, 2 sealed GCN Zelda collections and a handful of NFR GBA and DS cartridges - total to me $10!

She had a whole sack of the NFR GBA games, I mean literally a clear garbage bag full, I offered her $100 for the bag and she suddenly got nervous and took them back in the house.

    Awesome find, I'm jealous!

The Harvest Moon one sounds cool too, where the heck was that trash can?

Is that how it worked in Australia? I'm pretty sure that here in the US all retail copies were Banana Yellow Game Paks despite the box labeling it a collector's edition.

    Nope, quebec city :p

On the sidewalk, on the street. Actually there was a pile of boxes next to the can. On the top box I could see some jewel cases sticking out.
I went to check. There was mostly burned PC cds and other craps, but on the bottom of the box I found a few N64 carts, all in great condition.

    -Mission impossible.
    -WWF wrestling
    -Some other wrestling game.
    And...
    Harvest moon 64.

That is an insane find. The last Donkey Kong Not for Resale in grey on ebay went for $390 dollars. I would say that could be the best find you will ever have and will be hard to beat. I have been thrifting constantly for about 3 years and from what I recall the best game find I ever had was a mint Suikoden 2 for $2.99 at Goodwill.

I got it worse than that.

I once dreamed I was myself some kind of game character and upon beating my enemy inside a tower of some kind I was given as a reward the location of a secret place where all the gaming hardware in the world could be found, and I would be there first.

I went to the said place ( which was actually a street adress ) and went inside.
It was some kind of huge convention center, 3 football field sized stories full of hardware ranging from all the games ever to arcade machines and classic computers. Everything stacked and identified inside booths. I was alone in the whole place with a Grocery cart.

Of course this was awesome, I was taking my time picking the best items but before I knew it my cart was full! So I parked it near the entrance and picked another one for a second round. But then tourists started to come in, Families with their kids and old couples who knew nothing about gaming. I knew they were just there for lulz but because everything was free they were all picking stuff, making a mess and fighting over it.

I started to hurry to get as much good items as possible but it was getting hard with all the people, while trying to grab a factory sealed turbo Grafx16 I left my basket for a few seconds and when I came back it was gone!! All I could see was a couple kids fighting over an arcade board and destroying it in the process. So I tried to run back to the entrance to get at my first loaded cart but could not find it anymore. The place was now a completed overcrowded mess of people with no way to get around. All the hardware was getting stolen or destroyed in the Chaos.

    I woke up in panic.

They were not all yellow, haven't seen a non-yellow PAL copy though. I know US didn't always have yellow gamepaks.

I have 4 copies, US, all yellow. I am quite sure I've seen a retail standard grey one, though. One of the strangest things, I obtained the other 3 from friends who found the cart randomly around their houses & they had fallen out of gaming and/or didn't have an N64 anymore, so they just handed it over. No idea how it was always DK64... Did get another Smash Bros from one of them, at least. (I personally dislike DK64, funnily enough)

Haha, thanks for sharing. In my dreams I'm usually walking in a park and come across a game just lying around, further down the road I keep finding more. I'm filling my pockets in excitement and thinking about how I'm going to play them when I get home. I never sleep long enough to get there. Once I've collected the games I wake up :/

How do you know it's a demo version of the game? It doesn't indicate it anywhere. Or did you play it?

It's not a demo in the early code sent to reviewer sense of "demo", it's a "Not for Resale" copy, distributed to stores for use in demonstration machines. It's final code (usually) in a visibly different cartridge. The sticker on the back probably identified the store it was loaned to.

The NFR carts contained full games up to DS I think, the DS NFR Paks have demo levels, not full games (that I've experienced anyway).

This DK64 is an exception, it only contains 3 short playable levels. And yes I played it.

That's super cool! I didn't know that at all, no wonder people will play $$$ for it. Has anyone poked around in the code to see what else is there?

Below are some of the NFRs I got from the woman in Toronto, they are all complete games to the best of my knowledge, I haven't played through them, but I gave them to my 8 year old a couple of years ago and I think he's played most of Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island (not shown).

Usually when I get NFR games they're bundled with systems at launch and do not have barcodes. So they're nothing special.
