You've heard the expression "Will it run Crysis?" Back in the day Doom was the litmus test of sorts for any 3D system claiming to be any good and was the yard stick everything was measured against for obvious reasons. I'd have happily bought a 3D system back then based on how well it ran Doom. That trend of porting it to absolutely everything stuck and home-brewers to this day carry on the tradition as well as a few commercial companies. It's now seen as the test of a home brew capable system, once Doom arrives on there it's officially been broken in so to speak.
Also, iD has released the source code, so it's not like porting it is hard. And there's the fact that it's most likely one of the most popular PC games ever...
I still play Doom pretty much every other day, though it's the source port with Brutal Doom on top which has been customised to my liking with new sounds (PSX/N64 soundtrack and SFX) and tweaked weapon strengths (didn't like the vanilla config it came with and the chaingun was unusable with that silly wobble he added). It's hand on heart THE most fun and satisfying game I own to this day, plus there are a gajillion mods and levels available for it. It's the game that never stops giving. :')
I play Doom using the doomsday engine, but i haven't updated it for a while. Anything worth the update? I also use a wad called Aliensnd.wad, that adds sounds/voices from Aliens.
Not 100% sure as I use the Zandronum engine (the continuance of skulltag), I've basically got Brutal doom (with injected PSX sounds and a couple of custom ones) - I then just load whatever wad and it plays like a Brutal Doom / PSX hybrid with dual analogue from the comfort of the sofa. Absolutely amazing...
