Doujin Shooter Release on Dreamcast

Discussion in 'General Gaming' started by Greatsaintlouis, Oct 2, 2005.

  1. Well, the demo, anyways.

French (I think) group Handmade Games has just released for download the demo of their upcoming shooter on the Dreamcast, Drill. The game is of the manic, bullet-hell variety and, in my opinion, has a very Cave-esque flavor to it. The fact that most of the enemies seem to be giant beetles don't help that comparison much, though.

Download here, and be amazed: http://www.drill.rr.nu/

This is well worth a download. There's screen shots in this thread over at the Shmups forum.

"Fan made" works too, but many doujin shooting games are actually made by very small teams. That's why I said "amateur". When I think of homebrew, I think of a demo or something really simple. There are very good doujin games out there.

I downloaded this about a week ago. It's only a 1 level demo but in fact pretty impressive. The screen shots don't help much really but once you see it going and play it your impressions will change. I can't wait for the final release.

  12. GaijinPunch covered the term 'doujin' pretty well, but on top of 'amateur', it also insinuates a sort of 'by fans, for fans' mentality, in that the products are often created to appeal very specifically to a certain fanbase, and everyone else be damned.

I'm not sure if it's the best term for something of non-Japanese origin, but I'm sick of the existing nomenclature. I like my 'homebrew' drinkable and alcoholic, thankyouverymuch.

This is an old thread, in fact, a very old one.
    (RISE!!!)

Anyways, I want to play the demo for this game but the only place I can find it (since the original site seems to be down) is at http://www.dcevolution.net/index.php?id=drill but every time I download the RAR, it seems like it might be corrupting. WinRAR nearly freezes up when attempting to extract, and I've burned the game twice only to have it fail verification and, subsequently, not boot.

    Any hints/tips?

Also, what happened to this game? Obviously, it seems to be dead.

I still have the demo somewhere that I can upload for you but it may take some time, I'm quite busy at the moment.

Worked fine for me on NullDC- must be your PC.

Not a bad game, though the character speed was a bit too slow. Would have been good if this was finished.

BTW, I used 7zip to extract it. Your best getting that instead of Winrar.

Ended up re-downloading on my laptop, on my neighbor's internet, and burned it there. It worked.

I also *found* a copy of DiscJuggler to use, and it might have helped as well (I was originally just cdi2nrg'ing the file).

I really wish the demo was longer!
