Wanted to ask if anyone could point me in the right direction to get my PSP firmware downgraded to 1.5 (currently 2.6) without the use of GTA? Its looking like the homebrew scene may be worth looking into for the system again, as it was dead/dying back when I updated but now seems to have made a recovery.

I've heard some stuff about a custom firmware called devhook which I guess is whats needed to run new games on top of the homebrew. but thats about all I know about it, as i'm really out of the loop when it comes to the scene these days (spending all my time on studies and work).

You need to upgrade it to 2.71 before to be able to downgrade it.
I translated most of the french readme here(I haven't translated all the warnings), you'll also find the tool and the upgrade needed:
    http://lahz.dyndns.org/pspdowngrade271/
I used it myself successfully on the third try, don't lose hope if it doesn't work the first time...
And remember to have its battery charged and the psu hooked up.
As for the custom firmware, I don't use it, and you can run every games without having to flash your psp with it, you can find the usual files/howto here http://pspupdates.qj.net/index.php

As always, you can't held anybody responsible if anything bad happens to your psp...good luck!

I believe there is some downgrader files in the file section, which i used to downgrade from 2.6 to 1.5....As long as you follow the instructions, you cant f*** it up.

Hmm.....Heres the one i used myself, although this is a easy installer version: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/753

These are the instructions for it:http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/about17935.html

You were reffering to Devhook. Devhook is a firmware emulator, meaning that once your at 1.56, you can run devhook to emulate up to 3.02 firmware. Thus, anything that any other firmware can do, 1.5 can do through emulation :)

Edit* I can't stress this enough, make sure you don't have a TA-82 motherboard

Yes, absolutely. Make CERTAIN your board is NOT TA-082 (or newer). If it is, downgrading will brick it.

Before downgrading I recommend you try out the TIFF exploit with DevHook which can enable you to emulate fw 1.5 without downgrading. My brother has a 2.6 psp thats ta-082 which I fixed up with the "HEN" tiff loader exploit and the DevHook for 2.71.
