Have a DR. V64 256 MB CD Machine here and I was curious if it was possible to do two things. A. Upgrade it to 512MB, so it has 100% compatibility B. Swap the CD Drive For an HDD and perhaps increase load times Also have the very first run of the N64 NEO MYTH CART which can support up to 512MB, however it can only be loaded via USB and does so very slowly to a proprietary GBA-looking cart. I would like to upgrade to accept an SD or Compact Flash card or something to load the ROMS. I also would like it to also have a 100% compatibility rate for USA ROMS including Banjo Tooie and Jet Force Gemini. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
No, it is impossible to upgrade a V64 to 512Mb. It seems a HDD/CF firmware hack was released, see here. http://emuconsoleexploitnews.blogspot.com/2010/05/doctor-v64-hddcf-bios-upgrade.html You can use MicroSD on the Neo Myth, but you need to buy another adapter and probably yet another adapter to update the firmware.
In order to use a HDD (although not 100% sure if possible) you'll need to edit the BIOS. Upgrading the system to 512MB again would need some sort BIOS modification, and yet to some how squeeze another RAM board in side the unit. With all the money and effort you have to do to accomplish all these modifications to the V64 you're better off waiting for a Everdrive64.
Wow! Thanks for the quick and informative responses! I think I will have to invest in an EverDrive 64 or 64Drive.
If funds allow for it I say go for the 64 Drive. It has more features and better support for "clean dump" ROMs. No need for patching the 3 problematic games for use with 6102 CIC.
