Dragon's Dream is a japanese game for Sega Saturn, available for a short period of time, probably given away for free. It is maybe the first attempt to make an online RPG, and so requires the modem to work. Unfortunately, without this piece of hardware, the game doesn't boot and, as the service is long dead now, it is impossible to run it. Does anyone try to hack it so it could run without the modem ? It could be interested to see if it contains something interesting and if you can do something with it, without having to connect to the dead online service. Or maybe the most useful parts of the game were indeed downloaded from the online service and so, you can't do anything offline with the game. Some information about it if you don't know the game: Dragon's Dream for Sega Saturn
You might now already, but it seems to have also been released on PC. (http://web.archive.org/web/20030516022203/http://www.sega-am2.co.jp/jp/games/cri/netrpg/) I don't know much about it. The Saturn ISO seems to be spread around, so if it is ever hacked/translated maybe there could be new life in that game. There's an old topic about the game here: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?589-Dragon-s-Dream-for-Saturn
I'm a bit fuzzy on this but there may be code for the Saturn modem in the development libraries distributed by SegaDTS. What you *could* do is track those down, write a quick sample program using modem data, see how you control a check for the modem, then do a binary search for a similar string of code in the game, then either overwrite it with nop commands or reverse a conditional to cause the check to return positive (assuming that is what the case is).
It was free to gamers who requested it from Sega but required a separately sold Xband modem. The client software ran on the Saturn and you connected via dialup where you were charged by the minute to play. Legit copies go for $450+ in Japan.
Bought two new copies from Yahoo auctions which were really cheap (I recall around the 1000 yen mark) about five years back.
I also have one inc, envelope it came with... story was I bought a Saturn keyboard and when I opened the box at home under the keyboard was this envelope and the disc inside. $450 huh? Time to find my copy then
It seems this game is half released, half cancelled: (Joypad 71 - January 1998) Rough translation: Another article (which adds nothing new) (Joypad 68 - October 1997)
I don't think the import info found in Joypad Magazine was 100% reliable at the time. Wikipedia has good info on the important dates. http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon's_Dream 1997年夏:β版開始 → (Spring) beta version debut 1997年12月20日:正式サービス開始 → consumer version debut 1998年4月:接続料金値下げ(10円/分→6円/分)→ price drop from 10yens/min to 6 yens/min 1998年4月:Windows版クライアント配布開始 → Windows client is activated 1999年10月1日:運営終了 → service terminated
