Meh... I figured I'd start another "dream" topic in the absence of real news going on in the 0th bit. I do recall some people talking about funding of translation projects and so forth when the fourm first started so hopefully this should make for an interesting topic. My choices Homeland (Gamecube) Princess Crown (Sega Saturn) Rent-A-Hero No. 1 (DC, Xbox) Can't think of any else right now... unfortunately. what about everyone else?
Speaking from my side : SNES Starlight : Traverse & Prairie (translator needed) Far East Of Eden Zero (translator needed) N64 All DD titles. There you go . If someone wants to fund them, www.yntproject.net is the right place
Funding translations? Bah, fund yourself Japanese lessons instead! Translating games in the long run only benefits the translator who exercises their language/hacking skills. If you learn enough Japanese to play though games you a) won't have to rely on someone else to tell you stories second hand and B) you will be able to apply your gained knowledge to other facets of your life! Funny you mention FEoEZ kammedo, I started (and quickly stopped) translating Ziria; the game just wasn't worth the effort :/
Yeah, I feel that way about most translations on the web. Even professional translations are questionable as to their accuracy sometimes, so how am I to trust some random dude who's just doing it for fun? I really ought to learn Japanese but I'm too busy/lazy. Though, it's surprising how useful simply knowing kana can be! Lots of Japanese games have menus almost entirely in katagana.
Unfortunately most of us I guess just don't have the time to learn another language. Heck I hardly have enough time to get the video gaming I want done.
Id love homeland to be fully translated as from what i could translate its a really great story. Closest that your going to get is my guide that i did ages ago http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jasonmuir/homeland/Main page.html Hardly perfect but seeing as thres next to nothing about homeland in english on the net this is as good as its going to get, unless anyone wants to help refine my guide.
Far East of Eden Zero sounds like a great choice. I had thought of that one for ages. Why has nobody ever translated that?
Homeland on the GC, a very good suggestion. I m in love with that game, despite not having played it.
My dream translation project? Nanwaka Densetsu. For a Dreamcast VMU game, there's a ton of text and it's all in katakana. Even so, the menus and drop-downs are all only four characters wide. So a creative translator would have to use really short words (hit instead of attack, run instead of escape, and so on.) I can't imagine that there's any signature or CRC checking on a 128k game either, so testing and validation would be a breeze too.
ROMANCING SAGA 2. nobody's taking it... ;_; by the way, concerning translators, some games have such high quality translation that the result is unquestionable (TOP, RS3 Bahamut lagoon i.e.)
In the spirit of the first, primitive stone carving hackers, I've taken a disassembler and a hex editor to the Nanwaka Densetsu VMS file and discovered some interesting stuff. Having no knowledge of Japanese, it looks like the katakana is being stored in hex values A6 through DF in big, binary data blobs at the end of the file. I can tell that some of it is text because there's a fair bit that's in English, rendered as normal ASCII Roman characters. Anybody able to think of a reason why I couldn't theoretically do a search and replace, based on the screen output of the actual game? Let me know if this sort of thing needs to get moved to one of the dev forums instead and I'll haul my behind over there.
well a review build of this for the xbox exists...only thing missing is the credits, otherwise it's completely in english.
My dream translation project that is ongoing of course is the zany SegaGaga. Not only is this a translation, but James has gone ahead and tried to localize and explain the many "japanese only references" placed in the game to make this appeal to an english audience. If there ever was a awesome translation it will be this. I guess you could also count in Mother 3... but, you watch nintendos going to cave eventually and release the damn thing. Heck what do the guys at starmen.net have to do to get it through nintendo's thick skulls!!
The japanese Goemon Games... I made a translation of the First NES Goemon some years ago but never releaed it. it was almost done exept vor 2 Textboxes wich i was unable to find them in the game
It came 'very' close to being leaked here or at another forum a few years ago iirc. I'd really have liked to see Rent-a-Hero as well - I remember playing the dreamcast one for a long while but eventually gave up as 90% of the humour was just lost on me...it does look like a really funny game with a wicked sense of humour running throughout. One day eh? I'm sure a copy will eventually turn up....Just remembering now - I think a copy was also sold on eBay around the same time (or auctioned at least as it may not have actually sold...) - My dream translation project? (aside from the above!) Would have to be the Eldorado Gate (Capcom) series on the Dreamcast. I know it was never considered 'high art' by most RPG fanatics' but I always liked the great artwork and would have loved to know what the hell was going on!? I suspect a lot of ppl simply slated it just for the hell of it...I mean - are there many ppl here who can say they actually understood/played it through? - Here's hoping!
I recall someone at Romhacking.net claiming too have a copy. Have no idea if they were being honest though.
