Correct me If I wrong. I thought Dreamcast always has the most smooth and softntexture looks than Playstation 2 and XBOX ?

I think that's more because the programmers/artists designed games to have textures appropriate (simple?) for the console. Perhaps like how Mario games look fantastic despite any limitations of Nintendo's hardware.

if sega fought with nintendo the whole time it would of survived the gamecube sold 20 mill in 10 years
the dreamcast sold 20 mill in 3 years and still holds the record to this day of over 200k units sold on day 1

After the way Sega handled the 32x to Saturn to Dreamcast transition and then leaving the backdoor ability to boot cd-r's in the Dreamcast, their hardware days were over.

Gamecube had a different target market, although in some cases it seems that somebody forgot to tell the third party developers.

Neither consoles sales performance is an indication of how good the hardware was.

the ability to boot backups DRIVES sales as can be seen when the PS3 was hacked there was quite a large spike in sales
and there sales numbers do refect how good the hardware was nither one of them were in first or seciond place so it directly reflects how good the hardware was

but for the nitch market a sega nintendo battle would of kept and made shine for both the gamecube and dreamcast to keep going and show there best abilitys

    Niche. ;-)

Imagine a Dreamcast 2 with more RAM improved graphics core, faster processor and DVD rather than GD-ROM. For me that would have won over the Gamecube.

DC is certainly better in the graphics departement than the (original) PSP. The PSP has the advantage that the CPU can easily access the framebuffer (not sure if that works on DC, but I doubt it). The other, key advantage of the PSP is the small resolution of 480x272 and the small display. Many games use tiny textures.

The problem of both consoles I mentioned would be the lack of shaders. For good looking graphics you'll need to use lots of tricks rather than implementing them cleanly - your only other option is doing it on the CPU which will usually cripple performance.

So at the end of the day it all comes down to rendering tricks. Flatout on the PSP is my prime example for a graphicly well written game. So many neat tricks to make the graphics nicer - impressive. I'm pretty sure people could pull of similar stuff on the Dreamcast too.
Heck, check what people are doing on Amiga these days.

Pretty sure the PS2 broke all the DC launch records too.

    whoops i meant 10 mill

sonys own website only gose back to 2006 saddly so it cant really be confermed how many units were sold day 1 for the playtation 2
    http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_sale_e.html

no it didn't actually because they had supply trouble on launch day and the stores only ended up with so many
and on top of that in japan until the death of the dreamcast everyone was using them as cheap dvd player
dreamcast still holds day 1 sales record

Dreamcast was slick, it's a shame it couldn't keep up that 'millennium fever' cultural icon thing going, it was so cool.

Would of the dreamcast been able to handle most of ps2 games without reducing too much things away from them? An example would be like porting God of war to dreamcast

We got to be realistic about this shit man. GOW isn't even a 3rd party title. To add to that fact, the game was designed with a developer which one would assume was in an advantageous position to tap into the PS2 hardware with enough resource and talent. Who better to make a visually stunning PS2 game than from a Sony Studio.

Thats true, the one advantage that the PS2 had over the DC was backwards Compatability and the DVD Drive (new things at the time). If the DC had a DVD drive (maybe even Saturn Backwards Compatability) then Sega may still be around today. You also have to remember back then 500+ MHz processors, Monochrome Mobile Phones and 1 Gig storage were becoming the norm.

Obviously 1st party titles of PS2 ttitles are imposssible on DC..but i´m pretty sure that third party titles (taking out merchandasing issues out of the ecuation) like Fifa 2001, the 1sr PES, NFSU, GTA III, Soul Reaver 2, Virtua Fighter4, Soul Calibur 2, Max Payne, Porject Eden, Return to Casle Wolfstein, Red Faction and virtually all the 1st gen of PS2 games would possible on DC, maybe with some visual and framerate cuts, multi disc storage and longer load times...but still very playable!
