Though I've heard about Dreamcast compatible phones, the compatible stereo set (!) was new to me. It was showcased on an '98 video demo disc. Anyone has more info or the actual compatible hardware?

The arcade cabinets were everywhere until a few years ago as for the phones I saw a mock-up once (probably a mock) but nothing on the other stuff such as the stereo.

Im not too sure why they seperated the arcade machine from Joypolis really.
Were you able to download data at Joypolis every once in a while? Doesn't seem too unlikely.

Could the stereo thing have something to do with the planned MP3 player that looked like a VMU?

Some Naomi to Dreamcast games have VMU slots int he arcade versions in order to use your home game save data in the arcades or get special data from the arcade version for use on the home version. I'm not too sure if Joyoppolis has any other data services but I wouldn't put it past them.

Yeah I was aware of the data transfer in games like Power Stone. When's the last time you've seen such a cabinet?

Never. I was told Gauntlet Legends would let you use your save from the DC version but I've never seen the cab. I have seen an NFL Blitz 99 cab that will accept n64 memory cards. The unit is never powered on so I can't give it a try.

It was a Japan only thing, I'm pretty sure of that. Although...I recall seeing an F-355 cabinet with the slot.

@Profund; I just sold the disc to another user.

The Sega VMU arcade cabinets were is EVERY Sega arcade in Japan during the DC's life as well as many indies. F355 challenge certainly did have the VMU slot as you remember seeing, Segafreak_NL. I local arcade still had a cabinet with the VMU system installed however the holes were covered up so you couldn't put in a VMU. The VMU Cabinets were just normal Astro City cabinets with an extra bit stuck on just below the monitor for the VMU to slide in to.

It was the Naomi universal cabs that had the VMU slots. Some of the Capcom Impress range used a control panel that had slots for DC controllers.

The only gauntlet I saw had a N64 mem card reader. I have a reader in my collection somewhere.

Not only Naomi cabinets had them, Astro City ones did too. Below the monitor was a box for lack of a better word that could take two VMUs as once. Of course these cabinets were running Naomi based games butthey weren't Naomi cabinets. If I see one next time in the arcade I'll take a picture.

People , you are probably going to say I was blind, deaf and alot of other stuff.

But I seem to remember that Soul Calibur number 1 had two dreamcast VMU slots under the main screen. And I am that positive about it, since I have seen it twice , but the holes were stuffed. So you couldn´t put it in. But I am 100 % sure I saw it. in Denmark.

Soul Calibur ran on Playstation derrivative hardware in the arcade, It had no hardware link to the DC or used any kind of save device.

very true. The DC version of Soul Calibur was far superior to the arcade version in terms of visuals.

    Edit.

Ok guys, now I have seen with my own two eyes that Soul Calibur ran on a Playstation derrivative hardware. But then I just need a picture of the arcade machine, and not the game. Then I could point out, where the two "slots" were.

People I know what you are saying, and I checked it. But I am damn sure positive I saw two white "slots" under the big screen. Heck the first place where the arcade was put was right next to Palads Biografen(a movie theatre center) in Copenhagen , and I know that I was at the place with my first girlfriend, and if my memory serves me right. Then the place was called Funhouse. later on I saw the same machine at
Professor Olsens spilleland some years later (they probably have bought it after the other place was changed to some bar). And Professor Olsens Spilleland was in Scala right next to Palads , or 30 metres away from there. If it wasn´t VMU slots, what was those two vmu sized "slots" under the big screen then ? that were stuffed as such ?

And you could sit at the big screen on a bench, and you could also read a big Sega name on the arcade machine. I am NOT bulshitting you guys at all.

And I remember quite vivid what I did while I saw Fightclub in Palads.
So now you also know, that Fightclub was the movie I saw that evening. And I am not talking about Soul Edge, since that game was down in the basement of Palads in the widescreen version aka. 16:9 format, and right now I am searching for a picture of the arcade machine. But then please tell me what those two "slots" were underneath the screen of the Soul Calibur arcade machine, if they weren´t vmu slots. Since I can understand any correction of my statement, but I am not bullshitting you , other than maybe it wasn´t a Naomi board, but I am not joking or bullshitting about anything else. Of what I have told you guys.

I'd guess its just Soul Calibur in a Sega Cab which originally had the slots, but since theres no need for them they'd been blocked off

I think that clears it up. But damn it was strange, since I had an instinct saying "those two slots are vmu sized slots". And back then I read PSX magazine, and Gamesmaster, both from Future Publishing, so I knew something was right with my assumption.

that would exactally be it. Which is why when you go to a more "ghetto" arcade often you'll find cabinets don't match the game they're running. Or under neath the art, you'll find more art from a game it was previously. :)
