What's better? Should I get VGA Cable for Dreamcast and connect it to my LCD, or I should be playing on SDTV?

From what I've seen on the internet, people say that CRT is better for Dreamcast, but just to be sure I wanted to hear from you people.

    Thanks.

VGA LCD with scanlines is top.

If you can get a proper upscaler the LCD would do just fine. Some people feel the input lag makes LCDs unsuitable for fighters and the like but I'm not big on fighters so I can't say. Surely games like Shenmue won't be bothered by any input lag.

Personally I just think the built in upscalers in most HDTVs look less than desirable but it's more of an annoyance than outright unplayability.

There are a few panels which have acceptable (<1frame) input delay. AFAIK no manufacturer lists this on the specs though, you have to rely on sites like http://www.displaylag.com/ or random chatter on forums.

Dreamcast + scan line generator, looks pretty darn good on an LCD imo.

Good topic, I've often wondered the same. I have one of Beharius' Hanzo boxes which does a fantastic job on an LCD, but never really compared between CRT and LCD.

I was playing my Dreamcast on my Sony xbr through component (via rgb scart - component convertor) not really a fan though. When I get it set up I am trying it on an sony trinitron crt (same method).

Thanks guys.I think I'll stick with SDTV anyway because I wouldn't like spending extra money on scanline generator. It seems like to much hassle to me.

Dreamcast on my LCD TV doesn't look that good with default cables, but my HDTV is really old Samsung one, like from 2006.

I just wondered if it would look that much better with VGA cable. But as some of you said, fighting games would probably lag on it.And I plan to play a lot of fighting games so it seems like a simpler idea.

In my opinion, the best way to play Dreamcast games is via VGA on a CRT computer monitor. Unlike an LCD, a CRT computer monitor can display the image at its native 640x480 resolution. I've played DC and both LCDs and CRTs, and CRTs undoubtably look better. It can be somewhat difficult to find that kind of monitor these days, though. Craigslist is probably your best bet, if you don't have one already. They're usually pretty small by modern standards, but you can find 20" ones if you look hard enough.

Another cool thing about CRT computer monitors is that, although they usually lack component inputs, you can buy a component to VGA transcoder that simply converts the image without doing any processing - so there's no lag, and no quality lost. This is great for Gamecube and Xbox games.

btw, this probably ought to be in General Gaming.

Although only the handful of low-res Dreamcast games benefit from scanlines since most games offer a true VGA-mode in which using scanlines would be a waste.

    Y.Pb.Pr./high definition OR SVGA/dvi on a quality LCD/plasma screen...
unless you want the light-pistol compatibility? in which case, CRT's all the way! :cocksure:
    ...
i retired my gun because the CRT flicker (50hz inline with GB power grid) gave me a TWATTING headache, couldn't be arsed with f*ckin EYE-TUMORS anymore!
    ....
    if there's LCD/LED compatible light-guns for the DC? (or coin-op) .....
    .....
    choose your weapon! :cocksure:

It really depends. I have used S video and VGA, and I actually like VGA more because it truly brings out the colors from the dreamcast. The dreamcast I believe is native 640x480 resolution, and it has to downscale when using a composite and/or S video. If you don't want to go the VGA route, then definitely use S video. Since of course there are some games that do not utilize VGA, but with the hanzo it can output those games in real 15khz, and it is just gorgeous. I tried out gunbird 2 on my NEC monitor, and it just rox! Gunbird 2 has never looked so good =)

All in all it all depends on taste.

Another option is SCART. It's not as good as VGA, but better than any of the other options.
