    The fan in my dreamcast started making a rattling noise, so I bought a new fan of the same size and voltage, but it has a different size connector.

    I have the parts to make an adapter, but does anyone know the pinout of the Dreamcast fan connector?

    Issue is the DreamCast needs a similar fan as otherwise the console doesn't boot apparently, I think it is to do with affecting timings. On all other systems i'm aware of, the fan can be anything suitable and doesn't matter what, the DreamCast not so.

    3rd pin is for data to detect the rpm. Most fans should be compatible long as they are 3 wire rather than 2.

    If you get a 2 wire fan, you can fake the data with a 555 timer and it will work too.

    I have figured it out.

    1 = 5v
    2 = gnd
    3 = tacho

    I have made this adapter and now I can connect any fan with a standard connector. So far it works fine.

    if you want to run more powerful fans you could also tap power from the power supply pins

    I don't want more powerful fans, I just want it to be quiet. The new fan does the job.

    my meaning is that if people find it harder to get hold of a fan that matches the original they could use something else. i'm happy you're happy :)

    I've wired in several fans to Dreamcasts by soldering to fan points underneath connector. The early Dreamcasts fans only have 2 wires too.

    Sorta on topic;
    Where did you source the fan and what size?

    I need to change mine too sooner or later and need something that fits... I guess 40mm is the largest you can cram in there?
