You guys are all dreamcast fanatics, right?

I got another dreamcast, and It was majorly busted, got everything else working on it, but I think theres something wrong witht the rechargable battery. I assume it's that Big Disc that sticks up aroun the front of the console...right between the power buttons I think. Can you guys tell me anything about it?

No matter how long I leave it plugged in (so it can charge) it still asks me for the date and time. Any ideas?

You have to replace it even though its soldered in. I say buy a new dreamcast, its only 14.99

I've got like 5 Dreamcasts, I don't need another one, but getting this one to work would give me something to do.

:smt100 A bare dreamcast will set you back an average of 50 or more euro's here and a new one will cost you 99 euro's :-(

    Well...

That's only in the US, KoolKid, where I happen to live, but theres no point in just throwing out a perfectly good (otherwise) Dreamcast.

Edit: Oh yeah, I popped in a browser disc, and it is saving my internet settings, but not the time....Wierd...no?

Can I Steal the controller board? Mine & my spare both blew yesterday in the middle of a game change from a weekend long multiplayer-fest :smt022

Mine does this too, i read somewhere about how to remove the battery and solder in a AA holder which you can just put standard rechargeables in, I'll see if i can find it...
    http://devcast.dcemulation.com/mods/batteryreplace/battery.php there you go!

Haven't tried this myself though, although i need to, so i can't tell if it works or not.

Right, Just to let you all know that I've done this today, and it seems to be working perfectly, Just a few notes

The original battery is a bitch to remove. Lots of wiggling - I didnt manage to desolder it, i simply put a flat-head screwdriver in and forced it out - But beware, This bends the metal quiite significantly

and secondly, the writer of the original guide in some points has the polarity mixed up - the positive terminal of the batter connects to the side to the right if you hold the board with the sockets to the left.

Finally, You need to juggle around where to put the battery pack - There aren't many locations it will fit, i found to the left of the GD-Rom drive worked well, but as i said, you need to use a little trial and error to make it fit

Apart from these little problems it went fine, and my dreamcast now holds a charge. Oh, and if you manage to royally bugger up your dreamcast by trying this, don't blame me!

    Re: Well...

Well in fact that makes sense, considering the internet settings are saved to the flash rom (which is permanent) whereas time is kept in the battery-backed memory. Why time isnt saved in flashrom is beyond the scope of this post :smt043

Hmm, well, I'll be damned, I thought the internet settings were held in the battery back up as well. Hmm, interesting to know...and yes, we're all aware why you wouldn't save the time in a flash ROM.
