    Hi
I have read in a magazine (Retro Gamer - now deceased - www.retrogamer.net :crying: ) that the Dreamcast/Katana dev software was released by Sega as open source.
Is this true, and if so where can I download it, and how do I use it? What I have found is either too confusing, or is full of dead links.
    Thanks!

    Chris

It was not released as open source, however, the software document kits have been leaked on the net. P2P programs are your friend. ;-)

OK, chasing up on my on post.
The software is called KallisitiOS (KOS), and this is the bit that confuses me.
    How to install it.
It's not in exe format, and as I'm new to this world, I'm confused.
    There's more information at: http://gamedev.allusion.net/softprj/kos/.
Any one that's not as stupid as me that can help?
    Thanks again

Yeah...that's the open source one...not the official Sega one. KOS is Linux only as I recall...so...you'll need either that or Cygwin...which I hear is a pain...and would still be hard.

Edit: Basically you're not going to find an ".exe" because it isn't windows software.

KallistiOS is freeware with source code, something I would go with if I were looking into homebrew development for the Dreamcast legally. For compiling source code, you would need a C/C++ compiler as well as supported tools (prolly somewhere on the site).

Packages from the site release archives

    - dcload-ip - A Dreamcast ethernet loader. You will have to burn the files onto a CD-R to work. The data is required for proper booting/execution on a Dreamcast unit, dev unit, and/or emulator)
    - dctonic - Some games. The first file contains uncompressed data while the second file is a Padus Disk Juggler CD image and the third is a Nero CD image.
    - kallistios - The KallistiOS itself.
    - kos-compiler-tools - Some tools.
    - kos-demos - Some demos.
    - kos-mmu - A project requiring a C/C++ compiler.
    - koswin - Compilation for DC Development of KOS under a Microsoft Windows32 environment.
    - kosx - Compilation for DC Development of KOS under a Macintosh Apple OSX environment.
    - libdream - Libdream releases; use KOS for new projects.
    - ps2-load-ip - Sony Playstation 2 ethernet loader.

Burning uncompressed game data onto a CD-R to boot on a Dreamcast can be a very tedious job, and sometimes requires patience if you are not used to it. There are a couple of SelfBooting utilities out on the net, Exoboot being an excellent one.

There's a lot needed for starting homebrew capabilities for the Sega Dreamcast without using the official SDK, and the kind people over the DCEmu forums may be able to further assist you into heavily detailed stuff, some beyond my knowledge. ;-)

    ~Regards

OK, I think I get it now, thanks guys!  Just one more Dreamcast question I don't know if anyone will be able to answer, can you still access the Dreamcast Dreamarena in Australia? I've heard rumours that you can, but I can't try because my only Dreamkey is European, and I don't think I'm going to dial out to England just to play a game! I just need to know if it's worth trying to get a disk?
    Ta again
