Having ordered a copy of Under Defeat from Yakumo, I now need to start to think about how my PAL Dreamcast is going to play it. I was considering the DC-X disc, but is there a install-and-forget mod chip for the Dreamcast that anyone could recommend that is still available to buy?

    TIA

I play original import with a backup of action replay. It's the cheaper and best solution

Does this one do 60Hz on a PAL machine, like DC-X or a modchip would?

Actually it does, as I just found out :)

The picture is shifted to the bottom though, starts about 1/3 into the screen, with the bottom cut off. Could be my TV I guess.

If you modchip a PAL system the games tend to default to 50hz so the best thing is to either get one of the good boot discs DC-X etc or modchip a NTSCU or NTSCJ system.

On the modchip page I read, that it works with backups :) Now isn't that neat. Someone is trying really hard to sell their mods. I personally use Action Replay CD, since you can choose what type of image do you want to display. If you boot it on a PAL console, and with Action Replay you force it to boot the game in NTSC, you'll get the full NTSC signal, not the PAL 60Hz. Hell, even the spinning DreamCast logo will be red instead of blue.

Why would you want NTSC over PAL60? PAL60 is widely regarded to be better than NTSC....

Well I guess when you run an NTSC game on PAL-60 you get black borders on top and bottom?

No it will be full screen and the game will run at the same speed like on a NTSC Dreamcast. Only the color encoding is different.

Well, PAL 60Hz does combine 60Hz refresh rate with PAL colors, which is great, and I love this system, BUT... I often use my TV tuner, and I can use either PAL 50Hz, or NTSC. Which means PAL 60Hz would be displayed in black and white.

You can force any DreamCast game to display in NTSC if it supports 60Hz mode, by booting from Action Replay [You can of course modify the binaries too]. And if the games are NTSC only, the deafult system a european DreamCast will use is PAL 60Hz, and that doesn't do it for me, when using TV Tuner.

So is the best Dreamcast to mod the NTSC consoles? Will they still display PAL games in PAL 60Hz? Thanks in advance
