I've come into possession of masters (the glass plates) used to make discs. I also have the print material masters. Does anyone else have disc masters? I am not sure how to preserve these.
http://ezinearticles.com/?The-CD-DVD-Manufacturing-Process&id=1724062 Does that link help at all? I honestly don't know if it's possible to create a working disc from such a glass master plate without the right processes and equipment, plus it's unlikely a professional would help (unless you are one yourself or know someone in the business who owes you a favour...) as there are obviously going to be ethical problems with reproducing material that may still be protected legally.
The disc masters are very sensitive to any dirt, dust, smoke and even small scratches from handling can ruin them. Depending on how they have been stored you probably have some nice shiny objects but I would assume that atfer all these years the chances of using these to make anything is probably close to zero.
according to wikipedia glass masters are made in a class 100 ( ISO5 ) clean room but it also says its possible to clean them but you still need that class 100 clean room https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Compact_Disc_manufacturing hope that helps you here are the clean room classification class 100 /ISO 5 appear to be a level 3 clean environment thats the old standard sorry it appears to be a level 5 clean environment ISO 5 room air / normal atmosphere is ISO 9 https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Clean_room#US_FED_STD_209E_Cleanroom_Standards NEVER MIND after reading some more of the wikipedia article it says that once that glass masters are formed they ARNT susceptible to the dust and partial stuff when you go to actually make disks with them you gotta wash them i would store them like you store a glass windows separated but stacked so as to not touch each other and cause scratches through the data i WOULDN'T wrap them in cloth because that might get stuck on the data part and break off the bits of data you might get away with wrapping them in news paper or such
One of the worst things that anything sensitive could be wrapped in. Anything touching newspaper will get ink and dirt and dust on it. Regardless of whether they can be washed later that's a bad idea. Not that there's any future application for these, as Jamtex pointed out. Great as a collection piece, though.
You can clean those with a Can Compressed air spray. Those cans are expensive (well at least here in germany) but yeah, its worth it.
that sounds like one of the most obscure things i have ever heard of. Awesome. Would you ever get in touch with the sort of operations that frame memorabilia, gold records and the like? They should know how to take care of valuable things. Not suggesting that you have it FRAMED but that may be a reference point for people who preserve things.
Been having a nosey at some of my old posts to see what I stuff I've had and lost and found this thread which may be relevant: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7 Calpis on page 2 seemed quite knowledgeable on the mastering subject, maybe they have something to add? EDIT: Had fail link, fixed (I hope).
