Anyone know how far Sega got with this cool device?

I remember reading about it in 2000, when i had just got my first mp3 player... if only i could find the artical.. it mentioned sega offering mp3's over DreamArena, and that it was going to be 16mb.

    Here's an early hardware pic:

If only they had been the first to do what Apple are now doing with the iTunes Music Store and iPods. Perhaps thing would have been a lot diffrent, and it would be Sega buying Sammy.

   )

    .

if i'm not mistaken Sega did show prototype VMU with built-in MP3 play. AFAIK it never went into production...

now come to think of IF Sega DID put DVD drive as well as MP3 compatible VMU they would have winner in their hand...

    cheers

  6. I was gonna say, I'm not sure the VMU MP3 player ever went any farther than the one model everyone seems to have a picture of at that expo, the same one that featured the DC DVD player and the Zip Drive. Also, as far as I've heard, the VMUP3 player (clever, no?) shown wasn't even a working unit, just a proto shell, but I could be wrong.

you are probably right. Was heard that one at the show was just mock up and it never went to the prototype stage... On the other hand I thought Zip Drive was in fact working prototype... no?

    cheers

I would say it was a mock-up, and nothing more. I saw it at a TGS, along side the ISDN adaptor, which never came to light either.

  9. I'm just flat out not sure about the Zip drive - a lot of people say it was merely a plastic shell, others say that there was in fact working Zip hardware in there. I personally have no clue.

Despite the fact that probably none of them work, they would still be one hell of a collector's item, were they not lurking in some Sega vault somewhere...

  13. As you well know, ninja are trained in every art of combat, both armed and unarmed, and must sometimes at a moment's notice be prepared to do battle with whatever objects are located in their surroundings... even if it is a toothbrush.

See what i find funniest here is that someone has to take these pictures for him...

What do his room mates say about him when hes not around... :smt043

  17. The sad thing is, my roommates WON'T take pictures. I am a master of the 10-second timer or the self-photograph. Which when I think about it is rather sad...

I remember to have seen a sort of promo video of Dreamcast VMU MP3 Player long time ago.

    MP3, DVD and Zip

Both the MP3 and DVD player hit the mockup stage, but were never shown working. The Zip on the other hand was fully finished hardware that never shipped due to a combination of the DC dying and lack of developer support. The only application I ever saw running on it was streaming video.
