Hi guys recently got me a JP Dreamcast, very excited as you can imagine to play games like Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia in full 60hz etc. However I have a very odd issue... When using my PAL Dreamcast via composite on my crt tv it displays fine (forget about image quality for a second), the overscan is all correct and as you would expect. However, when I tried my JP console using the came composite it seems the image is too big for the screen. So on virtua Fighter 3 for example character names at the top of the screen would be half off my TV. Does this make sense? It's a little confusing as my JP N64 with regalar composite doesn't do this, and my JP Saturn with composite doesn't either. (I have RGB for them both, it's just to explain why I find this odd). Any idea why it's doing this? I'm 100% certain that using VGA or playing on a HD LCD TV would probably not have this issue but it's still a little confusing... Any clearing up or help would be appreciated, I know people here know about retro consoles and games inside out!
I'm guessing it has something to do with NTSC having fewer lines of resolution than PAL. Different systems handle output differently so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. Given you're using your Saturn and n64 with RGB and your DC in composite that would also likely explain why this is happening. Bet if you used RGB cables it would react differently.
No no, if yo re-read, I used composite on my other JP consoles without issue which kinda made me more confused. I didn't think it'd matter so much but if it's not a major issue then It's all good. I do plan to pickup a VGA box eventually. I just love playing my old consoles on a crt..
