    Hi!

I´m looking for a Dreamcast R7 from Japan but I also want to install a GDROM USB on it, but I can´t find information about which model revision R7 have (V0, v1 or v2).

Japanese Dreamcast doesn´t indicate revision in back (circled "0", "1" or "2"). So I take a look into model (HKT3000) and according to this guide it´s the launch version! How it can be since R7 was release in 2001?

    http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/dreamcast-hardware-list.22804/

Can someone that have a R7 tell me what I can expect?

    Thanks

    Mauricio

Don't mean to offend you but that's disgusting imho. Get a normal Dreamcast and install your gdusb there.

I´m not offended but I think "disgusting" is a too strong word. Maybe for purists it´s a crime to "mod" a limited edition but I have not space to have various versions of same console and want to have easy of use with beauty. Why not?

The Dreamcast doesn't have a warranty sticker, and installing a GDEMU is totally reversible without any traces, so even for a purist this shouldn't be that big of a problem ;)

It's worth pointing out that the R7 Dreamcast isn't exactly rare - unboxed consoles can be bought for between $100 - 200... last time I checked.

Is that so? Well that's comforting. I thought there was some soldering involved.

Its plug and play. Soldering is involved if you want to install the lid switch. Or if you are concerned with heat and jiggle with the PSU

Mine (lid switch) is already installed from a broken dreamcast, so no need to mess with R7. I have all the parts unused to do a picopsu but so far I don´t need it (based in my temperature readings).

About the R7 a seller from Japan is helping me to find out the revision. I read something about differences in fan and other parts from v1 and v2 that can be viewed without open the console. I will try that.

My R7 is a va1 but was the model that came with a black NBA adapter. I got it unboxed from a seller that didn't know what he had obviously. I was looking at the pics and noticed it San LAN instead of LINE on the modem. I quickly bought it BIN for $100 regardless, then messaged the seller to make sure this was pics of the model I was buying. Wasn't even aware some of the R7's came with a BBA from Sega. The seller was the original owner (well sort of I guess he said it was used in some game style parlor where he got it from. So the first private owner) and never took it online. To get the system for $100 (prior to shipping of course) was a deal IMO but to get a black BBA as well totally blew my mind. System was a tad dusty and needed a good cleaning when I got it, this is how I found out it was a VA1.

I prefer VA1. According to this site VA0 should have a metal cover fan and have pipes from heatsink, so even without open it the seller told me that he didn´t see any metal looking into the air entrance.

So the only remain options are Va1 and Va2.

va1 have a plastic cover fan without pipes see pic
Va2 same as va1 but with integrated GDROM controller in motherboard (not GDEMU or GDROM USB)

Needs to be open to determine.

But Va2 is rare and Sega started producing only on October 2000. The console that I bought have a stamp in the box with the purchase date. See what the seller told me:

"Attached are some pictures of the box's label, it says 12.9.14. Japan uses a special system for the year, related to the Emperors reign, so "12" means Heisei 12, which is the year 2000. This was when the console was bought."

Thats is why I´m expecting to receive a VA1! :)

    R7 bought:
    HKT-3000 Japan special model
Digital blue circle on behalf of the production date 0 · 2000 system (white box portion corresponding MIL-CD)
"SEGA-Enterprises" underneath the console, written in katakana, according to the website, this means it was made prior to October 2000.

Hi, I received the R7 two weeks ago but only remember to post the info here now.

    Indeed is a VA01 console. :)

Already installed a GDROM USB (internal version but with a small hole in the back to pass a usb cable) and a picopsu. I made the picopsu install easy to return back to original psu if needed.
