Thought it might be an interesting topic for a few of you...

Over the last few years I've managed to aquire about 200+ different sample cover art displays for Japanese DC games.

Many of them were released to Japanese retail stores with the idea of promoting a games upcoming release, The good thing about many of them is they differ completely from the finished box art.

Thought I'd show a small sample of some of the interesting ones:

    For comparison:

    Final Sonic cover: http://sega.jp/dc/db/photos/manual/981008_l.jpg
    Final Godzilla cover: http://sega.jp/dc/db/photos/manual/981001_l.jpg

Final Sega Rally 2 cover: http://sega.jp/dc/db/photos/manual/981003_l.jpg
    Final Blue Stinger cover: http://sega.jp/dc/db/photos/manual/981006_l.jpg

Final Penpen cover: http://sega.jp/dc/db/photos/manual/981005_l.jpg just a background colour change (they're are 3 variations including an orange back on the retail demo disc release

Im pretty sure I've now got doubles of the above 12 sample covers (they are all original card releases with a large DC logo on the reverse) so I would be happy to sell them if anyone was interested in them.

If no one wants to buy them before Saturday I'll stick them up on videogameauctions.com

The Sega Rally 2 sample certainly looks much better than the mess that was used in the final release. Nice photos!

Very nice, Kron. Geist Force even!

You know, I have a stack of Saturn ones, but they're not samples. They're pre-release covers w/ release date (and price sometimes) for stores to hang up. Never got around to adding them to JG, but will some day.

Well, I did post this one which is an unreleased game.

Yeah, The dig 2: Blue stinger, looks alot better than the real deal.

I'm quite interested in them though I'm not really sure what they are worth.

    I second that remark.

Where do you get these? I'd be interested in collecting something like this. I like anything that's store display/store promo-ish.

Oooohh give me that Geist force Cover !!

I have to say that many of those covers are far better than the end result. Sega Rally 2, Blue Stinger and even the Penpen one look much better.

    DC sample covers

Not a full collection but i have about 700+ sample covers and have about 100+ for trading don't think anyone has a fullset as there's so many variants out there
Alot a completely different from retail there's three main styles of sample covers
I'm working on eventually making a site but scanning is a long process
Always after any for the collection

700+ covers, easy to say, not so easy to achieve. Nice!

I'll be happy to look at your site when you release it ;)

Yes still short of a few:)
I'm getting a new scanner as it seems to leave marks on the scans+it's old it's served it's time!
There's four main types that i've found if anyone has anymore i'd love to see them
Thick card ones like what Kron posted these are 1998-2000ish
    Godzilla Generations Front.jpg
Same as above but thin glossy card 2000-2002/3ish
    DVD style covers 2002-
Later Capcom/Koei/Konami style all in one packaging type sadly these don't fit in my scanner but you get the idea
    Eldorado Gate Vol.7 packaging sample.jpg
Always on the lookout plenty to trade if you have any samples please get in touch
Sorry the pics are so big
