    Hi all,
I've recently rescued a Dreamcast from limbo in a mates house (buried deep in his box room). I want to modify it quite heavily, so I'm putting in some research about connecting the GD-ROM access indicator and SD card access indicator to the main LED after replacing it with a multi-colour LED.

I'll document the Mod as I carry it out for the benefit of others

I'm looking to perform the internal SD card reader modification so that there will be an inbuilt slot in the side for SD cards, the video and instructions can be found here:

I'd also like to add in a GD-ROM activity indicator, however, and here's the tricky part which I'd like some advice on. I'd like to hook the GD-ROM activity indicator and the SD card activity indicator into the main LED.

Basically I'm looking to replace the main LED with a tri (or bi) colour LED which lights one colour when powered on, adds (or changes to) another colour when GD accesses, and a third colour when SD accesses.

By the way, I couldn't find the instructions for the GD-ROM access light mod anywhere but found the author on youtube and hit him up for a copy of it which he was happy to supply, many thanks to ae86myae86

I've attached it to this post for everyone's convenience.

    ae86myae86's comments on my plans:
    "
No problems. Sounds like a cool idea. The main LED if i remember correctly is 12volts. Where as the activity led is 3.3volts. However you could use a small 3-5volt relay from the activity wire to switch the power to the secondary colour on the main LED. Unfortunately my knowledge of electronics isn't that good. But something like that should work. "

Has anyone attached multi colour LEDs to computers before and is familiar with how this is done? Any advice would be great. The LEDs I'm looking at are something like this:

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/high-brightness-multi-colourled-26384?ordercode=CJ53H

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/5mm-bi-colour-leds-35802?ordercode=YH75S

I know the LED has to be 3.3v I'm just not 100% sure yet about how to go about connecting it to 3 sources.

I have a switch-less region modded Saturn which has a power LED which changes between 3 colours, so I'm guessing this mod would be similar to that. Maybe a little different as the colours would need to overlap. However I can't get to that LED as there's a massive glob of glue preventing me from seeing what's underneath.

Thanks for reading anyway! Any advice on this is much appreciated...

I'll be making a start on this next week hopefully, at the moment the difficult part will be attaching it all to a single LED as I don't have any experience of this yet.

Here's what I have so far as a rough start:

The above is how I would imagine I'd wire it up to show 3 different colours depending on what's happening. I'm not sure about resistors needed at this point as I'd imagine they'd have to take into consideration there's three separate voltages coming in over all.

GND on the above connects to the neg on the control board where the LED would usually plug in.

No problem, I knew a few people on here were looking for instructions on how to do the GD access indicator.

Wow nice instructions. I think this could be of some use to others wanting to mod their systems.

I think you will have a small problem with the sd card led
I have done the sd card mod you posted.
And I can tell you that the led is always lighting till the sd driver are loaded by dreamshell.
It means for exemple that the led always light when you start your dc without to load dreamshell.
For this, I think that one should add component that the led from sd card only light up when there is a certain voltage or maybe change the value of the resistor.

Very neat cut in the controller port :)

    Also a great looking mod.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into working that in as I'm dealing with the theory at the moment.

New guy bumps a thread that's nearly 3 years old just to say good job. Good job to you. *sarcasm*
