Dreamcast SD Card Reader & GD-Rom LED Mod

    Dreamcast SD Card Reader:

Hi all, I had a tutorial posted here for a while on how to create the SD card reader before for yourself however, it was lost during a script kiddie attack I believe. Anyway in order to complete this build you'll need the following components (bear in mind I live in the UK, but you should be able to find these in your local electronics components suppliers store.)

Parts I used were from Maplin (UK electronics store).

    1x Electrolytic capacitor 47uF 25V (Maplin part #VH32K)
1x Decoupling ceramic disc capacitor 0.1uF 50V (Maplin part #BX03D)
    1x Metal film resistor 470ohm 0.6W (Maplin part #M470R)
1x 3mm LED (Any should do - for example part #N20FN)
    1x Stripboard (Maplin part #JP46)
1x SD card interface - I used an old PS3 usb hub and hacked off the SD card slot from the end.

The breadboard schematic I used was kindly supplied by RetroGameTech and works beautifully. Below is a diagram of how the components are laid out on the breadboard, I've included the original schematic for reference:

This was pretty much my first Console Mod and so the soldering on mine is a little dicey but it works just fine.

On top of this I basically extended the cable holding the LED off the board and drilled a hole into the underside of the Dreamcast power window at the front (the V at the front of the console) so that it would light up there when being accessed. I've also added an LED soldered to the underside of the Dreamcast GD-ROM, which provides an indication of when the DC is accessing the disc (lights up blue when doing so). This was fitted along side the red led under the V at the front of the console.

OK a word to the wise, the new version of Dreamhell is even more picky about which SD cards and adapters work and which don't. Here's a quote from SWAT to clarify:

The above statement speaks for itself, I can't get ether of my 4GB cards to show in the new Dreamhell, however one of them is a class 2 and the other is a class 4 so neither of them meet the SD card minimum spec. I'll have to try with a class 6 + somewhere down the road, but I can't see myself going out of my way to buy one at the moment as it most likely won't work anyway due to the wire length in these mods.

So bear that in mind folks. The above mod works perfectly with the older version of Dreamhell, however you will probably be better off buying a short dongle to go directly into the serial port going forward. Doing this mod doesn't disrupt the usability of the serial port at the back ether.

If you are running the new version and can use this mod successfully then let me know what card you're using so I know what type to look out for in future.

Long time listener first time caller..

Sorry for digging up an older thread.

Are the red icons on the breadboard cut traces? I asked RetroGameTech but waiting for replay.
