I was working on a Dreamcast a couple of days ago and when I powered it on the breaker for the plug sockets in my house tripped. I realised that like an idiot I'd left the plastic shield off of the PSU and it must have shorted somewhere.

With the plastic back in place the console powers up, beeps as usual, but the disc drive doesn't spin and I get no image on the screen. Internal VGA wiring is all good, and after a bit of googling I've seen the odd post suggesting a faulty PSU can cause these kind of symptoms. Any advice on where to start probing on the PSU board? Is there a common part that dies when this happens? This is a PAL console. Cheers!

sounds like a Motherboard issue , if you can't isolate the faulty component (Cap for example) and replace it check out Squeept's store on ebay for a Motherboard he does sell these at times. Btw he ships to US only so i hope your in the US.

I did this to my Dreamcast as well. Forgot to put the plastic back and in a flash of light, tripped the house fuses. The look on my partner's face was priceless. Ur lucky u didn't electrocute yourself.

Like u, after putting the plastic back, the console fired up but no picture. The disc spins up. I checked the voltages on the psu pins, 3V, 5V, GND, GND, GND & 12V, all checked out. So like S8n says, sounds like a motherboard issue. Good luck finding the problem. I eventually gave up and got another VA1. :(

Thank you all for the replies! I'll take a look at the motherboard as well as the psu in that case, if I don't have any luck I'll get a replacement.
