I just put some of my electric shaver oil on the sled rails, the motor and the gears.

The DC is noticeably quieter now

If your general computer CD/DVD-Rom/Burner makes a clicking noise and refuses to read CDs, chances are the sled for the laser ran out of grease! I have seen this problem at work a couple of times.
Especially with models made past 2003. Seems almost like an engineered breaking point to sell more.

I did not have "Tamiya Ceramic Grease" and used *ahem* water resistant marine lubricant for boats etc.
Thanks for the tip, I will buy some of that grease!

I know this is a little old but I greased up the gears and sled with a small bottle of appliance oil I had lying around and the Dreamcast still sounds loud. I used Grandia II as my test game since the game makes a ton of noise loading the spell animations during battle. How quite is the laser unit suppose to be after doing this? It so loud that when I turn the sound down at night the loading noise along overtakes the audio coming out of the speakers.

Mine was about 40%-ish quieter, but it was really loud to begin with. Not all dreamcasts have the same laser assembly, I have an early console that hasn't been greased, and it's quieter than the one that I did.

You could try a thicker grease on the gears, as long as it doesn't slow the motor down. If that doesn't work, it may be the motor that's noisy.

yea i hav a 1999 model and a 2000 model and the 1999 model is noticably quieter than my 2000 model dreamcast. it all depends on how much the dreamcast was used. ill hav to try and greece the gears and see if quiets my 2000 model down

I like the noises the Dreamcast makes. Sounds like raw power.

    Nice guide though.

I will also voice my opinion of the Tamiya Ceramic Grease, it is the key. Have used for years on ALL drive based consoles, I first started using it on XBOX's.

Nice and slince but how can i get this to work on the dreamcast a new fan is cool.

I like the sound of the gd-rom drive would not be the same with out the gd-ROM noise.
its just the fan noise is a pain.

Oh forgot the wires are red yellow black if that helps.
