I bought a cheap dreamcast from ebay and it was missing the gd-rom spindle. Is it possible to buy a similar spindle and replace it and if so where could you buy one?

I'd search the part number if you can find it, as some Chinese companies have NOS, I had a similar thing with a Saturn spindle motor recently.

Are you looking for a spindle top or spindle motor? It isn't clear...

PM BAD_AD, I know he has several PSX/PSone spindles, they might work.

I actually replaced a broken spindle on a dreamcast with an early model PSX spindle. It didn't work well. In my experience, the PSX spindle, designed for a 2X CDrom drive presses against the disc with much less pressure than the DC spindle does. When the DC disc first starts spinning up at 12X, it outspins the disc, which isn't sufficiently locked in with enough pressure from the spindle. This can cause damage to the disc, and in the absolute worst situation, cause the disc to slip off the spindle, and get mortally wounded on the bottom by the still spinning spindle. There is an easy workaround to this though, I put a small square of saran wrap over the spindle top, to go between the spindle and the disc. This increased the grip between the spindle and disc, and worked fine... although it's much less elegant than finding a working spindle to begin with.

A lot of laptop CDrom drives have a spindle top that looks exactly like the DC spindle top. I bet you could find some junk 10 or 15 year old laptop for a couple of bucks and maybe use that.. although by the time you spend $10 or $15, you could just buy another DC.

You're in luck.... I striped down a DC today.... PM me with a price you'd be willing to pay and I'll mail it out.

I've got an old laptop so I will have a shot at extracting the spindle.
