I've done this simple VGA mod on my newly aquired DC. While the DC works perfect with my bedroom TV and the monitors I've tried it with, it won't work at all on my livingroom TV where I want it hooked up. The living room TV seems to be kinda picky, it didn't like my VGA modded Xbox either, it couldn't handle sync on green.

After reading up some on the subject it has come to my understanding that the DC doesn't output a fully standard VGA signal, as it uses parts of the same signal when outputting other signal types. The official VGA box contains some electronics, my guess is that its purpose is to convert those non standard parts of the signal into standard ones.

My best bet is probably to just get myself one of those VGA boxes and try with it instead, but before ordering, I wanted to check if someone here happen to know for sure if my guess is correct. Is there any difference in what a VGA modded box and a VGA box outputs (does the VGA box output a fully standard complying VGA signal?), or would it just be a waste of money to order one?

    Thanks in advance!

The VGA box does seem to have something in it. There are also VGA cables, the difference is the box has auxilary outlets for SVideo and Composite. I suspect the problem is the living room TV, maybe it does not support the lower VGA 640x480 resolution of the Dreamcast.

Yeah, I can see a few IC:s in photos of it too. There's also another more advanced internal VGA mod that incorporates some IC:s, which I guess is an equivalent to the VGA box.

When booting my HTPC the TV shows the Windows XP booting screen without any problems at all, and that's a VGA signal in 640x480 resolution, so the resolution in itself shouldn't be a problem :)

Oh well, maybe I should just order a box and try it out, it's not like I'm gonna break the bank doing it :)
