If SEGA had shipped this version of the console, then it would have delivered performance on par with a Hikaru Board.

Here are some videos, demonstrating what a Hikaru board is capable of -

From the very beginning, Sega's intention with the Dreamcast was to design a platform righting all the wrongs it had made during the mid-90s. In other words, any resulting console was to be programmer-friendly with single CPU architecture, standalone hardware (lacking add-ons such as the MegaCD or 32X, plus the frequently-rumoured Saturn upgrades that ultimately never came to fruition) and capable of next generation visuals, as opposed to being more of a stop-gap. Remember, the initial plan for the Saturn was for a system boasting only modest 3D graphics because Sega felt the concept of three dimensions in gaming would be a passing trend.

While not entirely correct, the majority of people continue to regard the Saturn's second processor as a last-minute addition due to Sega's concerns their product would fare poorly against the far superior PlayStation, which at the time it felt would only provide a short-term threat due to Sony's relative lack of experience in the business. Media coverage of Sega's post-Saturn plans was quite widespread, and many key details of what eventually turned up inside the Dreamcast were being reported long before any product went to retail, never mind actually going into production!

You'd at least think someone would have posted before now - with EVIDENCE, that most crucial of words - if there was any truth to this latest claim that Microsoft urged Sega to drop a second SH4 from the Dreamcast's specifications. Of course, the clue lies (and yes, there was a hint somewhere there) in who first brought this supposed fact up. I'll say no more because it doesn't need a rant from yours truly to highlight this latest falsification. Do those of you who've already responded also possess sensitive noses? I too have been alerted to a creeping smell of bul...

I love the way you quote a forum post that was ridiculed on Beyond 3D. I'm assuming this akumajou is the infamous Zach Morris?

as far as i remember there has not been any official statement claiming this.

i highly doubt they were considering this for the dreamcast development as they wanted to do "everything better" than they did with some of their previous console generations and they also wanted to stay competetive price wise.

of course they were aware of the possibilities that multiple cpu´s could give them, but most likely they had this in mind for future (and more costy) dreamcast spin offs. that´s why they went this route with the hikaru and naomi 2 boards

Oh, that gouy? Oh, I retract my sarcastic comment. Totally. I didn't know it was stated by a guy on an internet forum who named himself after a fucking castle.
