Have just gotten one of these SD card readers that plugs in the Dev port on the back on the Dreamcast, i have downloaded and burnt the CDI image from the 'DreamShell 4.0 RC 1 + Boot Loader image' zip file on DC-SWAT's website, have placed all the files from the DS folder on the root of the SD card (FAT32) which is inserted into the SD card rear thats plugged into the Dev port on the rear of the DC. Now im having some problems, the 'DreamShell 4.0 RC 1 + Boot Loader image' disc loads and shows the DreamShell menu but if i select boot from SD card i get a message says 'cant init filesystem' and if i select boot from CD i get a message saying "Can't find DS_CORE.BIN.". Can someone help me out with this please?
Yep means you have an incompatible SD card my friend. Going to need to get another one. Never gotten anything above class 6 and 16gb to work with Dreamshell. Cheap cards tend to not work either san disk have never failed me so long as it wasnt above class and 16gb. But the funny thing is the same cards that dont work with Dreamshell work fine with DC SD Ripper. My class 10 32gb el cheapo card works great with it but gives me the same error you are getting using Dreamshell.
It´s a shame why this issue haven´t been fixed till now,why get new functionalities like harddrive discs if the sd cards are not completly compatible :/
I think its hit or miss. My 32gb card is an off brand and it worked with some games and others just wouldn't work. I think using such a large card from the serial port just is too much for the port in general. I doubt its really a Dreamshell problem since it works with HDD's and CF cards read from the IDE pinout with adapters. I spent like close to $50 for my SD card in like 2010 and was just so displeased with the whole thing I gave up on the serial port adapters. Just waiting on saving some money up now to have a friend mod my system for HDD with a IDE to Sata adapter and a large 2.5 sata drive so it can be powered from the system.
My issues are that my sd adapter is made from a schematic on the net,it´s possible that a buffered adapter don´t have such issues ,because from my tests i had a mini sd that loaded to dreamshell ,but never read a iso in full always crash the console ,the only option i have is from the obsolete sd dreamshell loader, which in my opinion should be upgraded ,like in the rc versions.
I am thinking of adding the ide to my Dc ,since gd-rom emu project was a limited batch as i think. I never saw were we could get one ,neither the prices of them . :/
Thanks for the reply greg ,but i am using a 16 gb class 4 sandisk and it works like a charm, although i tested a lexar 8 gb class 4 and glitched all over even crash the console, neither a samsung 16gb class 10 worked ,so that is why my question. The class 10 card you are saying is a sandisk 32gb class 10 ? Regards JOSÉ
I am more than convinced that is neither a dreamshell issue but a bios issue,i don´t know if the bios like atreyu is unlocked on this issue ,because on my tests i get 2 more megabytes on read with hardware alteration but didn´t gain reading speed, maybe because bios are locked so the peripherals used on the serial port didn´t require too much speed at that time. Even if the game running on sd crashes with the normal bios the console didn´t detect the card for about an hour or so,which leaves me think that the bios defenitions are stored on the flash memory after the console being shuted off,and are charged by the remain capacitors. This issue don´t occur on the hacked bioses at least not in the on i tested.
