I'm suprised no one has mentioned this unreleased game yet. Anyways RacketBoy put together a great article on the game that is quite a great article on a Tron inspired DC game launch title that disappeared http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sega/dreamcast/2007/06/drones-canceled-dreamcast-launch-title.html Anyways, I'd give a better summary, but the article is so great I don't think I need to add more. What does everyone think about this? Anyone got more info?
Hmm it's not much more than the article from SSM, which isn't new to me. Hoped he'd talked to Nigma and got some more info.
Did anything ever come of the "Dronez" project in any shape or form for another platform other than its original arcade and Dreamcast versions, as it seemed like far too advanced an idea to be shelved completely? Maybe the concept or game engine ended up being used elsewhere?
I think that it had a PC release as "Dronez". At least it came bundled with another game (Gunlok, I think) when I bought a Geforce card some years ago. I am pretty sure it's the same game
Looks like it: http://pc.ign.com/objects/012/012316.html Edit: It was released on XBOX in Japan - http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-3l-49-en-70-42u.html
So much for the DroneZ masterplan! All that production work for something finally released as little more than a PC tech demo and Japan-only Xbox title, which definitely isn't the goal originally set by its developer. I wonder if prototype builds of the Dreamcast or arcade versions are in circulation, though presumably they won't be too different from the end product - this one always seemed "trippy" in a Tron meets Rez kind of way to me, regardless of the shape or form it ended up being released in.
