We recently got DSL, which is a nice change of pace from 56k. I don't have to worry about using the phone line anymore, speed problems, or America Online bending over to allow all sorts of neat things to load themselves on the computer. I've been having problems with it, though. If I ever go on certain sites, it will just die on the spot, giving me a message that a "network cable has been unplugged." MySpace tends to do this (laugh it up), along with occassionally eBay and HOTU. I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to internet/networking problems, so I'm hoping you guys can help.
are you going online via a router or is the computer directly connected to the dsl modem via a network card ?
Another possibility is that you are getting a weak DSL signal. This is known for DSL subscribers and you might be too far away from their 'signal station'. This happened to a relative of mine, he was simply too far away to get a DSL signal, so he ended up having to go with road runner, cable. Check the modem to see if all the proper lights are on or blinking. Especially the light that represents the signal line. CHeck the modem manual that came with it, you should ahve it, to see if it is getting a DSL signal.
Yeah, like Mr. Hatter said your location matters, also if you could list the details of your particular setup we might be able to glean any additional problems. Do you use a router with a firewall, what ISP do you use, stuff like that.
Lately this "Embarq" service has sprung up in NC (I don't know about other places) and that's what we went with. They gave us a modem and the line filters that go on the phone jacks. I was planning on getting a wireless router so I could use a laptop when I get one, but that all depends on how this goes. I'm using the "integrated" network card, if that has anything to do with it. It never gave me problems when I was FTPing to my Xbox, but I know this is something entirely different.
So. Is that integrated network card hooked up directly to the modem? If so. Check the lights on the modem to see if you the lights are giving the right indications that it is functioning right or wrong.
Make sure that you did not put a filter between the wall jack and your DSL modem (it needs the unfiltered signal) but that you did for all the other devices you have plugged into the phone line (phones, Tivos, fax machines, etc.). If you have even a single filter out of place you could get some odd problems.
filters are un necessary. If you have a shitty linksys router then thats your problem. That used to happen to me when i tryed to stream videos, fixed itself by some reason.
Actually, it depends on the quality of the devices that you have hooked up to the phone line AND the wiring inside your house/apartment. My DSL runs fine if I run my phone without the filter (though the sound quality on the phone does degrade), but if I let the Tivos go unfiltered, I can't even get the DSL modem (not Linksys) to find the line half the time.
is it really a filter ? cause in germany we use a splitter which splits the dsl signal from the phone signal so neither of the one gets confused wouldnt leave the splitter out =) the pro site of a router is you can check the line quality easily and also have a log file in case the connection gets reset you can find the cause relativly fast, dont know if thats easily possible with the network card directly connected to the modem
We have two phones in the house, and one of them has a splitter connected to it, which is where the modem is plugged in. I suppose I could go unfiltered for a while to see how it worked, since that particular phone has three jacks. I probably didn't explain enough about the modem. It's just a little black box with lights on it. There's no brand marking or anything of the sort. By the time I check the lights on it, it has already disconnected. I'll try putting the line through the phone unfiltered later today. If that doesn't work I suppose I'll have to call the company. Thanks for the help, guys. Edit: I left out something that may be important - "Embarq" is a Sprint company. We've been using AT&T's phone service and we were unhappy with it, so my dad switched over to Sprint and got the internet with it.
