    hello

I got myself a PS2 test unit and it is working great,
Only I want to load my games from the hdd.

I know I this unit FMCB does not work from the memory card. But I have seen a video on YouTube the SATA drive is formatted and the pc an a image file is written to the hdd with fmcb on it.

When he plugged it in it booted fmcb from the hdd.

Does any one know if this works on test units ?

Or can give me a hint what the best way is to load the games from the hdd.

    Thanks

For such a model, your only choice is to boot from CD/DVD, to run OPL.

As with FMCB, FHDB is not supported by this early DEX model.

As OPL will not stop the CD/DVD drive, I recommend that you burn LaunchELF instead and enable its disc control option (unless you use wLaunchELF).

I believe only PS Memory Cards are supported by PlayStation games, otherwise I wouldn't have needed to buy one too. It should be mentioned in the PlayStation 2 user manuals (as to whether it is supported or not).

If it can be done, then that will be news to me.

PS2 memory cards aren't backward compatible, which is why they made it so you can't plug them into a PS1.

I don't think you could even rewrite the games to support it, unless you somehow escaped from PS1 mode.

Okay, i burned the OPL to disk and this works great,
I run my games (PSX and PS2) over samba.

I tried Final Fantasy X, and this works okay so far a i can see, But if i try to load Final Fantasy 8 over samba its to slow.
Even when i try on USB it is not working properly, i just checked the compatibility list and it says its not supported, i should have checked this first :(.

I ordered a SATA Adapter from Ali express, and i will take this apart and put the sata part in my ide BBA.

This way i can all the games on the HDD, I have to say my Test PS2 seems to be in good condition,
My retail PS2 always made a lot of noise opening the dvd draw and when the laser moved.

    this one is so quitte!

With the recent commits, this may be less of a problem. But playing from the HDD would still result in the best experience.

Not even with synchronous mode on (mode 2)?

You mean an IDE to SATA adaptor, don't you?

Maybe it needs some maintenance. The older designs were more prone to getting stuck, which was why they changed the design.

    Hey sp193

Yes the hdd is the way to go, but I only have BBA with IDE, but no IDE HDD,

I didn’t order a IDE to SATA, but a bitfunx SATA network adapter, I know the Ethernet port is not working on this, but I can take out the SATA part of the adapter and put it in the BBA with Ethernet I already have.

If this does not work, it’s also okay I just want to load the game form the HDD.

I don’t know about the synchronous mode!
I will have to check this out tonight.

My retail ps2 died many years ago after dropped it.

Installing an IDE to SATA adaptor would be best. Those compatibles do not always work very well. At some point, some of them started malfunctioning after some updates were made to the design of the homebrew DEV9 and ATAD modules, but workarounds were added.

Usually, they are made to interface with a SATA disk, so there is nothing for you to bring over.

Okay I I got my "Game Star" SATA adapter in the mail.
I took out the part with the SATA connector and swaped it with the IDE connector.

In ulaunch I see the HDD I can format it, and I can connect to the network (lights go on on the port, and router sees the ps2)

But for some reason in OPL I get a error "no network adapter found"

    sp193 have any idea ?

No network adaptor found? Or no HDD found?

If it could not detect the HDD, it might be the probing code that does not really like the SATA<->IDE adaptor that you installed.
If you are interested in it, we could try to figure out what part is rejecting the device and we'll see whether a compromise can be reached.

Hey SP193, first it said network adapter not found.
Now it keeps saying that the hdd is not formatted.

I formatted it with uLancher and it works, in this I can see the HDD I can copy my roms to it.
But in OPL it keeps now saying it needs to be formatted.

I am about to give up and order some blank CD's and DVD's and just burn everything.

But does the content stay, after you boot LaunchELF again?
If it does not, then the SATA<->IDE adaptor might not be totally functional.

If the content does get stored properly on the HDD and OPL is unable to read the HDD, then it may be the newer modules that are just not compatible with the adaptor you did. If so, then we can try to find the part that makes it incompatible and we can see if a compromise can be reached.
