Hey I just finished modifying my Japanese MegaDrive 1 yesterday to switch between regions with a single 3. position-switch (up = EU(50Hz), middle = US(60Hz), down JAP(60Hz). Works fine no problem.

I would like to add a multicolored LED to the system that changes colors according to region. The 3.pos switches (On - Off - On) I have used have two rows so I'm hoping the other one can be used to switch the LED color somehow.

The LED I have is a three legged red/green one taken from an Xbox. Middle leg is Ground and the color changes when 5V is applied to either other leg or both of them for orange.

I have no idea if this can be done simply with such a switch, I hardly know anything about electronics. But I'm guessing this is the best place to find the answer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

EDIT: To clarify, I want to switch colors on this:

You use two 10K resistors and wire it up like this:

I was hoping I could do something similar for the LED light. Thought I've had it figured out but a friend of mine said it wouldn't work with a LED. No idea why but he knows more about this than I do :)

Yes that's what I was thinking. Doing the exact same thing with the LED but on the other row of pins. My friend said it wouldn't work, but maybe he misunderstood me. It couldn't possibly mess up anything trying, right?

EDIT: Just gave it some more thought and came to the conclusion that the second row isn't needed at all (I think that's what you meant too, but I wasn't sure). Works fine :)

Soldered the wires to the jumper spots on the motherboard. Only problem is that the light is a little dull. Perhaps I should use the second row after all and use some smaller pullup/down resistors?

EDIT2: A couple of 1K resistors on the second row appears to be working better :)

    Thanks for the help.

Here are a few pictures of the mod.

You don't need a switch with 2 rows for this. Just replace the 10K resistors with 1K's and solder the LED wires to the jumpers. The second row was just used for testing different resistors for the optimal brightness, this works and I don't feel like changing it :)

The Xbox LED is the exact same size as the original one:

And here is a small one showing the different colors. Red and Green can be swapped but I like Red for JAP better:

If I don't use the resistors 5V and GND would be shorted when in up or down position. I think that's a bad thing.

Why the hell would you put GND on the switch at all?

I'd liek to do this to my gamecube, so when it's in US mode it has a orange and Red in Japan.

If not it would get 5V on both LED legs no matter what position the switch is in, goddammit... ;)

If you have a better solution then please by all means let me know. I already stated that I don't know much about electronics.
