First of all, sorry if this has been answered before - "game" and "gear" just aren't good words to search for on a forum centered around games and gear.

I've just given in to the urge to get a Game Gear once again, even though it's my 4th - Those things just seem to drop like flies once I own them. Anyways, the auction I won includes a cart that looks like it's not been dumped/preserved yet (James Pond 2: Robocod), which I'd very much like to do something about. Seems like GG ROM related hardware is pretty much nonexistent (apart from tototek's GG-Pro, which afaict doesn't allow dumping - also, way too pricey for my taste). Any suggestions?

SMSPower is the place to go for this. The folks there will either be able to assist practically or point you in the right direction.

Are you sure it's undumped? I'd be surprised if something that commonplace hadn't been dumped at some point. Another dump for verification is always a plus, of course.

Also, what was wrong with the previous GameGears? I know there are a couple of common faults that are easily remedied.

It's not in the latest GoodGG and I haven't been able to find it online anywhere else (yeah I know that's not saying much), and an (ancient) thread on no-intro.org lists it as undumped too.

I'm actually just coming from SMSPower (but thanks for the pointer anyways), having read the SMSReader article. It claims it can dump GG carts via an adapter, but what kind it doesn't say... Oh well, I'll just go bug the guys over there about it.

About the previous GGs: I don't recall exactly what was wrong with them, apart from one only having sound but no picture, just a white line across the screen. Doesn't matter anyways, the last one ended up in the trash months ago.
I know about the crappy capacitors, which are easy enough to fix, and I'm probably gonna exchange the backlight for LEDs on my new one, but apart from that I really cannot be arsed to spend my time trying to repair the little buggers when eBay's swamped with cheap replacements.

My bad, it's out there (and has been for quite a while). Must've accidentally grabbed an outdated list earlier.

I'd actually be curious as well. I have an unreleased Game Gear proto, and although I've dumped the 2 EPROMs separately, I've found it difficult to combine them into a working ROM image.

I'd love to dump them using a device made specifically for that purpose. Any leads?

Not to sound like a broken record, but have you spoken with Bock or Maxim at SMSPower? Assuming there's no bitrot or other dumping issues they'll almost certainly be able to get your current ROM images working. And if you do need new hardware, they're the experts.

Fair enough. I'll poke over there and see what they can do. Thanks for the info!
