I need some assistance with dumping games from a couple of Cartridge based systems, namely the Gameboy/Color and Game Gear. I've come across several different tools for the GBA but almost nothing for the GB/GBC. As for Game Gear cartridges, I'm really at a loss. That said, I've never dumped a cartridge before, Can anyone point me to the necessary hardware which can do this?
GB: GBXChanger (hard to find) or retrode. GB Transferer II cannot dump many GBC games with Macronix chips correctly so not recommended. GG: no idea, I think Bock from smspower uses a custom dumper. If you need to dump pirate/unl games you won't succeed probably. What do you need to dump?
The GB Transferer II sounds like it will do the job, the downside is that it will require an older PC. I want to dump a prototype cart among some various games which need a backup. Does the Retrode directly support dumping of GB games, or does it need some custom work? Still not sure about the Game Gear though, this one's more problematic.
the retrode will require the GB/N64 adapter which can be bought with the retrode. The GBT II will dump most mono games fine but GBC games often use ROM-chips by MX and it won't dump these. You will get random crcs each time.
you can mod an XG-Writer, EZ-Writer to dump GB games: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33610
What Game Gear cartridge are you trying to dump, out of curiosity? I could offer help to dump them if necessary.
I've been considering getting the Retrode 2 when it's available again. For GBC games support isn't essential but would still be handy, Thus the GBT II may not be the best choice for that use along with it's need of a parallel port. I could probably do this, but specifically it would be better if the carts could be dumped outright. The GG cartridge is also a possible tech demo/prototype of an unreleased game. Thanks for the offer, if there is no other solution for dumping it, then we'll see what we can do. ;-) Just to let everyone know, I'm not yet in possession of these proto carts as I'd like to have the means to preserve them secured beforehand but I guess that there's no real difference whether I have them now or after.
Are the GB adapters still going to be available for Retrode2? I preordered one but didn't see anything about those. I'm interested in this too, though I don't have any protos or anything like that.
Yes, he said that he's 99% sure that at least ones for the GBx, N64, SMS, VCS2600 will be available from him after release of the Retrode2.
I'll wait it out for the Retrode 2 in that case. Looks like it will be a better choice overall. Meanwhile, I'll get that GB cart.
