    Hi everybody!
I really hope that the next questions were not asked before, I watched the preservation threads and found nothing related.

I just received some days ago some dreamcast GD-R discs. I don't have a retail dreamcast, and even less some dev/test units. So my questions are..
    - how can I backup these discs, I don't want to see the data lost if something happen to the dvds
    - what type off consoles could read the GD-R discs (dev units only, modded retail dreamcast?)
    - and finally.. can I burn my (future) dumps to play them in a modded retail console?

THere is a lot of SEGA pros here, I'm sure you guys know ;)
    Thanks in advance to all.

You can dump your discs using a retail dreamcast using a guide I wrote with Dot50Cal : http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=6476844d16a9146f4c17ca8801618ef74e69a78b0c0dccd25621d66e282a0ee8

Otherwise you can give a go at ripping it with a LTD-165H DVD-Rom drive using this other guide (Beware, it's in french): http://dreamagain.free.fr/index.php...ft-ripper-un-gd-rom-avec-le-lecteur-de-son-pc

A dreamcast Dev.Kit Should be able to dump a game with a standard serial cable if you can find one. A GD-X (gd-rom duplicator) can also dump files to a HDD although it requires some work to put it on a pc.

If you can't do that yourself, I suggest asking someone here to do it for you, if you can trust him enough. Some people here are really trust-able, just look for them.

Once you dumped your files you can extract them with my gdi2data pack: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25081

And you can selfboot most games with my SelfbootData-Data pack (includes gdi2data): http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21735

For games that are in WinCE or that have CDDA, a bit more of work is needed, and a lot more of reading too to understand something at all about selfbooting them.

I hope I've answered most of your questions, I'm sorry for the many self-references, but these referenced tools are a collection of what I made for my own needs over the years put together to be as user-friendly as possible. It's the tools I know the inner working the most and that requires as less work as possible from the users as far as I know.. I do hope it's good stuff for you!

Cheers, and feel free to ask any questions on that thread about this subject, so other can learn too if you have interrogations.

Wow that's a lot of text!

No problem at all for the french tutorial, je suis Français donc ça va aller :)

I'll try these guides and give you the results later. Next step: to buy a cheap retail dreamcast on ebay to test the dump!

Be aware that only the Lite-On LTD-165H DVD-Rom Drive works for this as far as I know! Also a retail DC is useless without a pricey BroadBand Adaptor (BBA).

[French] Les autres lecteurs pourraient fonctionner par hasard, mais personne n'a jamais rippé un dique complet sans le LTD-165H. Aussi un DC retail requiert quand-même un onéreux BBA. [\French]

Maybe one could use a SD-Cable instead of a BBA and a technique based on mine to dump a gd-r, but I've never encountered someone with both a gd-r and a sd-cable (homemade stuff), nor do I personnally have in my possession a gd-r to test it out, so I can't make a procedure without constant feedback.
This alternative would be the cheapest accessible way to dump a GD-R in my opinion.

    Cheers,

    FG

I don't know.. just received them... I thought that it was impossible to read them "as this" in a retail unit, so i wanted to dump them and modify the dump to let it run on a retail (modded) console :s

You can also do a 'swap trick' to actually play the disc on your Dreamcast, prior dumping :)
